Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Plaid are arguably Britain's most influential electronic act. Former members of Black Dog, they have been responsible for some of the most ground-breaking electronic music ever recorded. Trainer is an attempt to chronicle the pair's early 90s heyday. Comprising rare singles and unreleased tracks, it's more of an alternative history than a comprehensive "best of" compilation. Still, it does contain some of the duo's most inventive and enjoyable material. Ed Handley and Andy Turner have always worked across the dance spectrum, and Trainer fluctuates between playful electronica, chattering techno and prototype jungle. They even find space for some Latin house, blissful ambience and rave-era breakbeats. All 25 tracks are blessed with Plaid's trademark electronic melodies and deft synth touches. It's this attention to emotion, mood and melody that elevates Handley and Turner above their workmanlike peers. Trainer is a fitting tribute to their genius. --Matt Anniss

4.0 out of 5 stars good entry point for Plaid, 11 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Trainer (Audio CD)
Before you mistake this for the new Plaid album, read the small print and you'll realise it's a collection of previously unreleased classic tracks. The two-CD (or three-LP) set consists of tracks from the import-nly 1991 album Mbuki Mvuki plus 17 other rare tunes, some unheard of, under the numerous aliases of Plaid, Atpic, Balil and Tura. Even the tracks which are getting on for a decade old still sound fresh and inviting, with my personal favourite Bouncing Checks sounding as cheeky and fun as the Chuckle Brothers. The two newest tracks in the collection - Android and Angry Dolphin from 1995 - sound experimental even now and pave the way for the new album which is expected some time in the autumn. Plaid fans will already have all this, but it's a good way for Plaid virgins to encounter them for the first time. Lisa McGee

5.0 out of 5 stars Old skool electronica from the Masters, 11 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Trainer (Audio CD)
Ed Handley and Andy Turner are Plaid. They've been making music together for over ten years, and, as two third of Black Dog Productions, released Bytes, in 1993. It would become one of the seminal electronic records of the nineties. In 1995, they regained their freedom, and kept on recording here and there under numerous monikers including Balil or Atypic. 1997 saw the release of their second album, Not For Threes, on Warp. And two years later, they brought out Rest Proof Clockwork, third sibling of the Plaid family. It is now time to step back in time, and discover or rediscover these rare early tracks, including part of their first vinyl only album Mbuki Mvuki. From the hardcore of Uneasy Listening to the drill and bass of Angry Dolphin, there is like a theory of electronica evolution here. And it is not difficult to see why these guys are so influential to this day. But the real Plaid sound doesn't really have anything to do with the aforementioned styles. Their electronica is a lot cleverer than that. Beats are intricate, melodies are simple and efficient, and samples are used with discretion... In a word, their music is more emotional than artificial. This compilation constitutes the missing link between late eighties dance music and today's electronic inventions. Intrinsically part of the Warp family, Plaid have paved the way for musicians of today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 26 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Trainer (Audio CD)
This is the best album I have bought in a long time. Their last two albums for Warp were fantastic and this rounds up almost everything you could want from their back-catalogue of pre-Warp releases. Dating from 1989 to 1995 these tracks are way ahead of their time, only giving very few hints as to their age. The styles vary wonderfully but all under Plaid's distinctive harmonic & melodic style that makes their releases so compelling. Consider also that copies of Mbuki Mvuki (the album that is included in its entirety here) sell for 250 pounds, and the Android EP for up to 40, its a pretty good deal. I highly recommend this for any fans of Plaid/Black Dog or even just techno fans in general.
