Amazon.co.uk Review

Absolutely Fabulous was first broadcast in 1992 and became an instant hit. Originally a sketch on the French and Saunders Show, Jennifer Saunders saw its potential and created one of the most ground-breaking and debauched comedies on British TV. Centred around the hip London fashion scene the series follows Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women who refuse to grow up and are constantly on a mission to lose weight, gorging themselves with cocaine and/or champagne, endlessly throwing parties (or throwing up at parties), and sporting outrageous outfits which were the height of fashion at the time--honestly sweetie! The superb comic performances offered star status to Julia Sawalha as Edina's straight-laced daughter and Jane Horrocks as the sublimely dippy Bubble, and re-invented the careers of Joanna Lumley and June Whitfield. Saunders meanwhile secured her status as one of the top female comedians Britain has ever produced. Although its consciously chic clothing looks a little dated now, its mad characterisations endure and the jokes remain as hilariously slick and apt as ever.

Ab Fab remains a landmark in TV since it was the first time that female comedians and writers had had the freedom and exposure to satirise problems close to their own heart, from their own perspective. With Feminist writers claiming that the ideals of feminism were dead in the 1990s and that female concerns were moving in the wrong direction--towards the "Laddette Culture"--and reports claiming that careers were taking a central role, forcing motherhood onto the back-burner, the series sought to embody and satirise these new supposedly "female" characteristics. As the show continued to grow in popularity both in Britain and the States, plans were made to transfer the formula to America. However, as with many other great British series, the content was considered too risky for American audiences due to the amount of sex and drug references. Thus domestic audiences breathed a sigh of release that their beloved Ab Fab would forever stay British to the core. --Nikki Disney

4.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous darling... except..., 11 Aug 2004

Fans of the earlier Ab Fab agree that Jen and the crew should have stopped right here. This was indeed the last shout, intended to go out with a bang. However, my main complaint is not with the content, but with the (as always) God awful quality from the BBC. Sound quality has never been great on the BBC dvds, but we have been able to get around that and catch the nuances with the subtitles. But on this, the swansong from Pats and Eddy, there are no subtitles... we don't exactly miss the jokes, but it would have been so much better with the addition of those little white words as a prompt at the bottom of the screen. If the BBC are going to persist in giving us such low sound quality (see Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, etc), it's the least they could do. Apart from that, cameo performances abound, it's fabulous darling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous finale!, 22 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Well here it is, the final ever outing for TVs most drunken duo, Eddy and Patsy. Preparing for a trip to the fancy ski resort Val D'isere, Eddy is floored by the news that daughter Saffie has agreed to get married, a fact which Patsy revels in, as it means she'll be able to move in and out of her flat above Oddbins. However, Eddy puts it to the back of her mind and sets out to learn how to snowboard. A night out leads to them trashing their chalet, and next day Eddy is off skiing, where she meets with someone she thought she'd never see:God!

Act 2 returns them to home, where Saffie plans her impending wedding to the slimy Paolo, Eddy believes she is Jesus, and Paolo and his super-rich parents arrive for dinner. While Patsy meets a face from the past, Eddy takes charge of the wedding and sets out to make it an event to remember. But will it all end in tears? This fabulous DVD comprises the 2-part "Last Shout" shown in 1996, and has some hilarious lines and characters. Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say!!!, 7 Dec 2002

Jennifer Saunders create a comedy in a class of its own. Here you get all the nasty, naughty details other films would avoid like crazy. Sex, drugs, boots, fat, you name you, she and the team definately been there, done it!

This was unfortunately really the final shout after 4 seasons of the show. Patsy and Edina decided to take the mountains for a ski trip and they had some wonderful + awful experience. Edina ended up almost to the edge of a cliff, Patsy while lands in bed with a hunky ski instructor.

The most hillairous part is the scene where Patsy trys to help Edina get rid of her pathetic and conservatibe daughter (i.e. Saffy) by using a very unique way of convincing the future mother-in-law that she is the perfect girl. Watch it, you'll surely fall off the chair.

Superb acting, intense chemistry. Sweetie darling, what's my credit card account number???
