Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bringing together the original cuts of classic tracks such as "Skylarking" and Dawn Penn's instantly recognisable "No, No, No", Studio One Rockers showcases not only the talents of influential artists that were to become synonymous with reggae but also the styles, sounds and above all rhythms that were to dominate Kingston studios into the 1970s and beyond. There are a number of rocksteady classics (hence the name), with tracks like hammond organ maestro Jackie Mittoo's "Hot Milk" and the legendary Marcia Griffiths' "Feel Like Jumping" highlighting the then dramatic change in style away from the faster beats of Ska towards heavy, bass-led tracks with a much slower tempo. But Studio One Rockers is not restricted to this. The semi-instrumental track "Phoenix City" pounds along at a breakneck pace with trumpets belting and, along with "Greedy G", shows the importance a faster beat, a funky take or a "big band" sound also had within the Studio One fold. There are tracks from DJs like Lone Ranger with his "Badder Dan Dem" vocal rhythms and dancehall sounds. Roots artists include one of its biggest stars, Horace Andy, whose then unique falsetto was later emulated by many looking for a similar pop success. Then a pre-teen, reggae star Freddy McGregor also appears on "Bobby Babylon". Freddy, like many of the artists here, was to produce some of his best work under the watchful eye of Studio One's equally famous producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. In many ways a tribute to Coxsone's production skills and rhythms that continue to be rediscovered and recut, Studio One Rockers is essential listening for anyone with even a passing interest in Jamaican music. --Caroline Butler

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation of Studio One Artists, 10 Feb 2001
This is an incredible compilation of artists and styles from the Studio One label - the most important label in Jamaican music history. There is not a single track on this album that doesn't kick. There's everything from Horace Andy's sweet "Skylarking" to the funky instrumental of the Brentford Allstars "Greedy G" and Lennie Hibberts "Village Soul", the dark Ska of the Skatalites "Pheonix City" and the moving roots of "Truth & Rights" by Johnny Osbourne and Hammond organ excellence of Jackie Mitoo. Even if you have only a slight interest in old reggae get this album and you will never regret it (be warned though because once you've openned up the gate to reggae you'll never be able to shut it).

5.0 out of 5 stars Number one of the Studio One output?, 28 Mar 2005

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Just about anything released on the Soul Jazz label is a guarantee of quality but maybe .just maybe Studio One Rockers is the best of the lot. The title Rockers is a bit misleading. What it essentially means ,as far as I can tell , is up-tempo for everything on this collection will your fleshy bits jigging half a second before your brain catches on.
So it's all as the sleeve note say "Classic Reggae". For anyone uninitiated in real reggae, as opposed to the diluted homogenous fluff that occasionally infiltrates the charts this will be a revelation. For anyone well versed in Reggae this will be a revelation as well. Let's just say its revelatory stuff. From the archetypal jerky Ska of the Satellites "Phoenix City" through to the more traditional Reggae rhythms of Horace Andy's "Skylarking" this is an absolute treat. Particular favourites are Marcia Griffiths euphorically vivacious "Feel Like Jumping" which has a similar popish magic to Abbas "Dancing Queen" , and Freddy McGregor's "Bobby Bobylon" which has a wonderful tumbling arrangement. There is the classic "No No No" from Dawn Penn plus the dub influenced Brentford All Stars with "Greedy G" and the D.J. influenced Lone Ranger and "Badder Dan Dem". There are Hammond led rock steady marvels like Jackie Mitto,s "Hot Milk" and the political Johnny Osbourne track "Truth and Rights".
Encompassing a 36 page booklet which features an in depth interview with Producer Clement Dodd this is a superb album that exposes just what a wonderful, energising and simply enjoyable music Reggae can be. Believe it or not some people think Reggae is one of the most straitjacketed and innervated genres of music and I should know because I was once one of them. Do what I did, seek this out or indeed anything on Soul Jazz and get yourself an education.
