Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It frankly beggars belief that a work as substantial and rewarding as Stanford's Violin Concerto in D (1899) should have lain unperformed for more than 80 years. It's a formidably confident, gloriously lyrical outpouring, comprising an expansive, elegantly plotted first movement Allegro, a central Canzona of frequently heart-stopping beauty, and a wittily exuberant jig-like finale, full of the most delightfully piquant orchestral colour. Anyone who fancies a change from the Brahms or Tchaikovsky fiddle concertos should certainly make a beeline to a work justly rated by Parry as one of Stanford's very best. The concerto was written for Enrique Fernandez Arbos (professor of violin at London's Royal College of Music), whereas the earlier, scarcely less-endearing Suite (1888) bears a dedication to the legendary virtuoso Joseph Joachim (whom Stanford had first met as a teenager in Dublin). These are passionately dedicated and scrupulously prepared performances from Anthony Marwood and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins, both pieces coming up as freshly as the day they were conceived. The recording is excellent, sumptuous yet admirably clear. Do give this typically enterprising Hyperion coupling a try. --Andrew Achenbach

Tired of the violin concerto diet you get when visiting concert halls all over the world? Then take a little patience and listen to this beautiful violin concerto by a Brahms and Joachim admirer: mr. Stanford's.

Very much praised in his lifetime (countless pupils learnt the composer job from him) he was nearly forgotten until Chandos saved him when they recorded his interesting symphonies and some concertos.

Hyperion fills the gap with this very British violin concerto (yes, you won't be disappointed, it sounds a little like Brahms without the way he handled orchestral development) and they already did a great job with the piano concerto (coupled with Parry's, again a very forgotten composer rescued by Hyperion and Chandos).

May I ask for some good recordings of the Songs of the Sea and the Songs of the Fleet? Thank you Hyperion and interpreters for this very fine disc.
