Product Description

Album Description
A new name in ECM's pantheon of Nordic talent, Norway's Trygve Seim is an exceptional saxophonist. Influenced by flute traditions of Asia, by free music, by his association with Edward Vesala, and by contemporary composition, he has arrived at a highly original music of his own, played here by a large ensemble brimming over with idiosyncratic improvisers. The music on 'Different Rivers' is often contemplative, but it also has real power.

Recorded 1998-9

Personnel: Trygve Seim - (tenor and soprano saxophones), Arve Henriksen - (trumpet, trumpophone, vocals), Håvard Lund - (clarinet, bass clarinet), Nils Jansen - (bass and sopranino saxophones, contrabass clarinet), Hild Sofie Tafjord - (french horn), David Gald - (tuba), Stian Carstensen - (accordion), Bernt Simen Lund - (cello), Morten Hannisdal - (cello), Per Oddvar Johansen - (drums), Paal Nilssen-Love - (drums) Øyvind Brække - (trombone) Sidsel Endresen - (recitation)

5.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of Jazz, 11 Jan 2004
I have to confess that I love this cd. As a saxophonist, I find the style and technique presented within to be a huge inspiration to me as a player. It explores fresh, intresting harmonys and pushes rythems away from traditional American and British Jazz. The opening track explores slow, mournfull sounds from a range of horns working together, and is followed by the wonderfull Ulrikas Dans, an up-tempo piece with wonderfull melodys and tones, accompanied by accoustic bass and wild drums.

The whole album works beautifully, and I would recomend it as a wonderfull achievment in modern recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Winds of melody blowing, 19 Dec 2008
By J. Severidt "jornfin" (Rovaniemi, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As another reviewer, a saxophonist himself, confirms, Trygve Seim is a marvel. His sound on sax is the most beautiful and the most distinctive new sound I have heard on this instrument since Garbarek. (And whatever your opinion of Garbarek's music, you will concede he added to the repertory of the tenor saxophone like no-one else had in a couple of decades.)
On this album you get tenor and soprano sax, trumpet, bass clarinet, clarinet, French horn, trombone, tuba and some other, bizarre, horns. These are supported by accordion, two cellos and two drummers.
Together, these instruments create magical moments, ranging from quiet introspection to dynamic, rhythmic dancing. The horns, usually more than one blowing in unison, create a feel of air, from calm breathing to gusts of wind. (A word on the drums: I wish every sound engineer on earth would listen to this! This is how to record drums. The impact of the bass drum particularly is the best I have on CD. Audio dealers will want to get this album for demonstration use!)

All in all, a very interesting, engaging, beautiful - though somewhat repetitive - record. Unfortunately, only for the first eight out of ten compositions. Alas! We are never safe in this world. Track 9, "Breathe", features (otherwise commendable) singer Sidsel Endresen's "recitation". This means she speaks stuff in between slow, breath-like blowing from the horns. This manages to drop an utterly beautiful album into the pit of new age nonsense. Here is a worst of:
"Breath for yourself and you breath for the world", "breath for your sorrow to fly away", "breath to renew the depths of consciousness". Dear Ms. Endresen, it is impossible for anyone alive not to breath. You cannot stop breathing anymore than you can stop digesting. And trust me on this: In spite of all of us breathing the best we can, the world is not being saved. No "sorrow breathed in", no "compassion breathed out". Sorry about that!
The first time I listened to the album, this one piece almost ruined it for me. This is stuff from the music for meditation -shelf. I was bracing myself for the song of the whales popping up in the mix.

Well, no need to let that spoil it, of course! It's just that it does, for me. 3,5 stars, which I'll make an official 4, because not everybody is as allergic to pseudo-intelligent nonsense as I am.
