2.0 out of 5 stars Dry and anaesthetised performance of Beethoven, 29 Jan 2009
This is of course a personal opinion and others might like the approach taken to the Beethoven Violin sonatas here. Personally I find them lacking in warmth and far too festooned with Mutter's increasing habit of "over playing" everything with a laboured fussiness of exaggerated contrasts and jagged phrasing: We get constant waves of inexplicable and total absence of vibrato followed suddenly by extreme vibrato, and the same applies to volume - she follows up a barely audible pianissimo with sudden full-on bow thrashing which does nothing more than disrupt the natural flow of music, and this goes far beyond the implied or real markings given by Beethoven. It becomes predictable: all soft passages have no vibrato at all, and all loud passages have too much vibrato. But without any musical reason.

This endless tweaking in an effort to flog to death every nuance from the two sonatas ends up being an unmusical, rather clinical mess. The music simply does not speak and this starts to irritate then becomes excruciatingly annoying. By contrast, Lambert Orkis's piano playing is generally warm, tasteful and in some places, exquisite, making Mutter's approach even more dry and cold by comparison.

There are a few interviews and insights on the DVD which are interesting enough and it is noteworthy to see that Mutter in one interview almost disowns her youthful recordings, stating that she would approach things differently now. Indeed true if this recording is anything to go by! Again this is a personal opinion but that is regrettable because I find her more youthful past performances much more direct, natural and musical than the performances we get here. Nevertheless, if you like her current approach and style, you will no doubt find this DVD satisfying.
