Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Imagine if you will, a small device slightly bigger and slightly heavier than a portable CD player. Now imagine that rather than hold an album as do some portable MP3 or CD players, that the small device can store over 100 albums. Well that's what Creative has managed to do with the Creative Digital Audio Player Jukebox.

Based around a 6 GB hard drive the Creative Digital Audio Player really lives up to its "Jukebox" name. It offers support in both MP3 and WAV formats, as well as coming with a reprogrammable firmware, which allows the player to adapt to additional digital-audio formats and software that appear as the industry grows.

Putting music on to the system is really easy because the software that installs onto the PC helps you through the ripping/encoding and downloading process. Either rip your present CDs or download music tracks from the internet.

The Jukebox connects to your PC via a USB port on the back, and although it would have been nice to see a Firewire option, the speed that the download offers is still comfortable enough.

With Creative's EAX and 4-channel surround-sound technology, which they use on their Soundcards, this device doesn't struggle to give good-quality sound. And although it is a tad more expensive than you would perhaps expect to pay for a portable MP3 player the extra money is giving you so much more than you'd get from the standard portable MP3 or CD player. --Stuart Miles

5.0 out of 5 stars A great piece of kit, 30 Aug 2001
I ve had by juke box a few months and I love it. Almost as soon as I got it I filled it full of music - its amazing how quickly you can use up 6 gig, particularly since the juke box has a load of classical and jazz music pre loaded.

That wasnt a problem tho becuase you can upgrade your juke box. I imported a 30 gig hard drive from the states from a special outfit that supplies them for this purpose along with instructions. I now have capacity to hold about 750 cds which is awesome.

A lot of people moan about battery life - you get 2 sets of batteries which each last 4 hours plus - but its fine for me. In fact i tend to rig mine into my home hi-fi and just play huge playlists with out getting off the sofa. I think its quite heavy and in some ways a better description is luggable not portable - if you want something light to jog with forget the juke box.

I havent experienced long boot times ..lots of people report 6 minutes .. for me its more like 1 minute which is fine.

Head phones stink - dont even consider getting them - in fact you are better just getting the DAP Jukebox - C which comes without headphones, carry case or preloaded music - if you already have a case, headphones and dont like jazz. I went for the full version tho and dont regret it . .i like the case.

What is superb is that the firmware is upgraded and one by one the bugs are being resolved. I think the next firmware release is meant to sort out the boot problem that a minority of people suffer.

Anyway get one its great, its upgradeable (firm and hardware), encoder/ripper software is ok (and there are plenty of alternatives around you can use if you dont like it)it looks pretty good and there are some ok accessories you can invest in too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not A Waste Of Money, 28 Dec 2001
I bought the Creative DAP 6months ago, and i'm pleased to say it has not let me down. Its been dropped down the stairs and fallen of my desk too many times, and amazingly managed to still work perfectly.

Advantages
1. Storing capacity is a huge 6gb
2. Easy to use menu
3. So So Strong (lucky for me)
4. Upgradeable Firmware
5. Good MP3 software
6. Two Line Outputs
7. Line in for recording

Disadvantages
1. Looks like a fat CD player ugly
2. Headphones are really cheapy
3. Its too heavy
4. The Menu is slow when playing songs
5. Takes ages to load up at the start
6. You can't say its really portable

The good points are really good and well the bad points are not really that bad. So buy it

Oh you can buy the 20GB version now for a little extra which is brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super... if you've got the cash!, 22 Nov 2000
By DWB1873 (Channel Islands) - See all my reviews
Overall this is a superb unit especially now that Creative have released a new version of their firmware which fixes some of the issues mentioned in earlier reviews (like not being able to forward through songs etc). NB! Update your unit as soon as you can - the nomad website has all you need. I agree with the earlier comment about build quality particularly the battery cover/compartment. Installation for me was straight forward without any problems. The software that ships with the unit is pretty good and easy to use. I've had no problems ripping CDs and the quality is great! This isn't a unit for jogging(its the size of an average portable CD player and weighs slightly more), you'd be better off with a minidisc or a Rio if you tend to run about a lot, however if you listen to music at home, work or in the car this is the unit for you. It holds about 150 cds!! Battery life is a little limited (in the JB's defence, essentially the unit is a small computer - a laptop wouldn't run on 4AA's - this does) averaging around 3 hours. Creative do include 8 NiMH batteries with the player and AAs are pretty cheap brought in bulk so this makes the player good for train journeys too (yes even ones on British Rail!!) Overall : Now the softwares been improved this unit knocks the socks off everything out there - if you have the cash GET ONE!
