Debbie Wiseman's score to the film
Wilde was extremely well received. Extra proof of its success is given by this concept album, which reunites her with the film's stars Stephen Fry and Vanessa Redgrave. They respectively narrate "The Nightingale and the Rose" and "The Selfish Giant", two of Wilde's most charming short stories. That narration sits between and above the tale told in music. Both are highly lyrical and humorous pieces which delight in taking instructive cues from the text itself, which reads like musical prose. For instance, when the giant appears, huge orchestral footsteps are trod. It also gives voice to the nightingale's final and achingly beautiful song. Throughout the pieces, a generous spotlighting gift is given to youthful up-and-coming instrumental soloists for violin, cello, flute and piano. Their contributions can be appreciated all the more in two bridging suites entitled "My Own Garden" and "One Last Song". This is a work that will appeal to a child of any age. --
