Product Description

Shortly after co-pilot Nick Vanzant (James Spader) joins 22nd medical rescue vessel the Nightingale 299, the ship receives a distress call from a mine on a rogue moon. The signal was apparently sent by Karl Larson, abusive former lover of the Nightingale's chief medical officer, Kaela Evers (Angela Bassett). The crew have to make a dimension jump to get to the moon, during which the captain is killed and the fuel supply is damaged. Nick takes command, and upon arrival the ship docks with a patrol vehicle carrying the sole survivor of the mining expedition; Karl's son, Troy, who is carrying a strange alien artefact. However, when Nick travels to the moon in search of fuel, Kaela soon realizes that Troy Larson is not all he seems.

From Amazon.co.uk

The makers of Supernova are apparently counting on the fact that generational turnover renders old formulas fresh again for new audiences. This is the only explanation for a sci-fi thriller that could charitably be called a "homage" to Ridley Scott's trend setting Alien. A medical rescue ship responds to a distress call from a mining colony and finds only one survivor: a strange young man (Peter Facinelli), who comes aboard carrying an even stranger alien artefact. But the plot of this film, which was directed and then disowned by Walter Hill, grows confused as it tries to explain the sinister force that will lead to a star transforming to supernova status, causing a universe-shattering explosion. Some nice sexual tension between James Spader (as the recovering drug-addict co-pilot) and Angela Bassett (as the ship's doctor). Notable mostly, however, for the eerie resemblance, both physical and vocal, between Facinelli and Tom Cruise. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

This is an entertaining movie, which certainly takes its cues from 'Alien'. A mixture of sci-fi, with some minor horror elements thrown in as well. The plot revolves around a 9th dimensional object that has the potential to cause a catastrophic cosmic event, and that has had some rather strange side affects on the man found with it. Most of the cast seem to take their clothes off every so often, which adds to the entertainment, but does make it quite hard to take seriously.

Can't argue with the good cast though: James Spader, Angela Bassett and in a brief role Robert Forester. They all do their best, but the sum of its parts never quite add up!

This film is not really a masterpiece and I understand those reviewers who gave it only two or three stars, as it could have been better with some effort from the scenarist, but I still enjoyed it, for numerous following reasons:

1. The cast.

James Spader is not exactly an actor associated with action movies and before watching "Supernova" I would have problems to picture him as an action hero. But in this film he is VERY convincing as a surprisingly tough, clever and coolheaded pilot of a spaceship, who after recovering from drug addiction is granted a second chance, at the condition of taking the difficult, dangerous and not so well paid job on board of a rescue vessel operating in deep space. His performance surprised and impressed me.

Angela Bassett is a very good actress and a very beautiful woman and honestly I think that in this film she is at her most gorgeous. She plays the doctor working on board of the rescue vessel and she is impressive with her display of competence, dignity and calm authority - and that even when she is completely naked...

Peter Facinelli became worldly famous for his role of Dr Carlisle Cullen in "Twilight" saga - here he plays a young man named Larson who survived a disaster on a distant mining colony and is found still alive by the deep space rescue ship. Considering how noble is Carlisle in "Twilight" movies it becomes immediately obvious how gifted and versatile an actor Peter Facinelli is, because his caracter in "Supernova" is completely different - and he is very credible in portraying it!

Ok, to give this even two stars may be a little generous but here goes...

The pros: It is filled with interesting concepts and details. There is fairly awesome future tech. Some of the acting is good. The ship looks kind of cool. The bad guy is fairly badass. Angela Bassett is in it.

The cons: The awkward shagging. The explanations. The ending. The ending. The ending. The plot black holes. The ending.

I'm really not sure if they ran out of money, time or patience but instead of finishing the movie in any decent fashion, they rushed in a plot device, tried to leave the audience with a gooey warm feeling (which almost worked when I puked a little) but just failed. If this had have been a homage to Alien, they'd have stopped the film at the last death. Played out with a bit of class, but no.

If the sci-fi murder by number theme could be compared to sex: Alien was a classy partner who gradually seduced you and made you feel valued, Event Horizon was a bit of a tart but was good dirty fun. Supernova was a cheap prostitute who took your money and was clearly thinking about the shopping while it waited for you to finish and left you feeling like you might want to visit a clinic afterwards

The back story to Supernova is actually more interesting than the studio cut of the film that is available to view. Director's coming and going, one (Walter Hill) taking his name off the credits, butchery by studio interference, different endings, different planned thematics, shelved for two years and etc. Supernova was a messy production and sadly it shows, making Walter Hill's original cut (unavailable) the Magnificent Ambersons of the sci-fi genre.

Plot, in the skew-whiff edited version we are fed here, is basically a riff on Ridley Scott's Alien. Space dudes up in space take on board a too good to be true hitch-hiker dude, which is a bad idea. Sadly it's all very dull, yet strangely you can see that in amongst the mess, and the often used diversion tactic of Robin Tunney's breasts, there was a very good film here. Brains and effects work to light up the screen, some sexy sizzle marrying up to the tension up there in the galaxy, James Spader on wonderfully broody and heroically damaged form, and some belting deleted scenes on the DVD. But, it's not to be, so the studio should be ashamed of themselves, even if it isn't quite the ultimate stinker it has been painted as. But! Super it is not, in any shape or form. 5/10

This is a fantastic little sci-fi movie from 1999, still looking good after all these years, a medical vessel in deep space gets a distress call which they decide to answer even if it means risking their lives by dimension jumping into a dying star, they rescue a mysterious survivor along with an unknown alien artefact that threatens mankind, the story is well paced out with some good action and thrills, its carried along with a great cast all round, James Spader is a cool lead, so is Angela Bassett as the female lead, plus we have Robert Forster and the lovely Robin Tunney, directed by Walter Hill (A.K.A Thomas Lee) (Red heat 1988, Bullet to the head 2012) the special effects are top notch and still look great, if you love a good sci-fi its really worth digging back up as its thoroughly entertaining!

UK DVD looks good picture quality (MGM)
Features include several deleted and alternative scenes, trailer.
Region 2 Pal, 87-mins, 1999.
