Slick to a fault, this glossy action flick takes place in sunny Florida, where Martin Lawrence and Will Smith play two cops--one married with kids, the other a swinging bachelor. The two are forced to trade places to foil criminal mastermind Fouchet (Tchéky Karyo) who has stolen $100 million worth of heroin from a police lockup. Violent, illogical and filled with wall-to-wall profanity, Bad Boys was the last film produced by the hit-making team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer before Simpson's untimely death and marked the directorial debut of Michael Bay who followed up with The Rock. Bad Boys will be of interest to action buffs and fans of Téa Leoni, who makes one of her early screen appearances in the central supporting role. --Jeff Shannon

I'm a big fan of action films, with cop movies topping the bill. Having read the other reviews here I had high hopes for this film - I ignored the occasional negative review reasoning that any film with Will Smith in it can't be that bad. How wrong I was!

The cinematography is lush and colourful, helped significantly by the Miami backdrop. And that is about as far as my compliments can reach I'm afraid - the film rapidly falls apart from the first moment the characters open their mouths.

The script here is utterly dreadful! Whilst similar untaxing commercial offerings such as the likes of Lethal Weapon or Die Hard give you witty and slick lines, Bad Boys instead resorts to perpetual bickering between the protagonists. It soon becomes tiresome and headache inducing. If I want a two hour bickering match I'll insult my mother in law - I really don't want to pay for the privilage thank you very much.

Worse, the contrived plot lines are just farcical. The basic plot premise is fine - the heist of drugs from a police impound - but the leaden, childish and forced attempt at both script and d'enouement does a great job of killing any potential the initial pitch may have had long before this turkey was actually hatched. A good script flows effortlessly and with finesse, twisting unexpectedly on its elegant and enjoyable path. This no-brainer stubbornly plods around like a doped teen with an asbo. It might be wearing a bit of bling on the outside, but under the hoodie it's sullen and ugly.

Back in the days when I was 12 years old I might just have enjoyed the ridiculous identity swap comedy antics routine, mugging to camera, constant yelling and agro, over-acting and ham fisted attempts at a buddie cop movie. Now though I'm a little more discerning. Basically this is one of the least enjoyable cop films I've ever encountered.

If you want a good knockabout cop movie watch any of the Die Hard or Lethal Weapon series. For something more serious but retaining the Miami glitz see Miami Vice. Someone To Watch Over Me is stylish too if you'd like to read my review. Or for a truly great - and I mean World beating - cop show experience try The Shield or The Wire.

As for this turkey - stuff it!

Will Smith who? back in the days when he hadnt made the full transition from sitcom actor to mega singer and actor. This original has style, a good story, outstanding photography and a beautiful leading lady. Its is great fun to watch as well. A marker for the genre and of the time.

This film is a film that fits nicely into the police comedy genre that includes films like Lethal Weapon and Naked Gun. It is up against some pretty hot competition, and it manages to hold its own.

The action sequences are well made and exciting, and there are enough of them to keep the movie going. The comedy scenes are funny and typical of the humour you would expect from Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. The plot is good, although at times slightly implausable, but it is an action film that goes with the territory and it needs something on which to build the comedy element. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence play their respective parts well, especially as this was quite an early outing in the film career of Will Smith.

Overall the film was very enjoyable. However, for no particular reason I don't think it was quite as good as the lethal weapon series, towards the end of its run the chemistry between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover was just so. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith had some chemistry, but the whole movie seemed too forced, un-natural. That, and the fact that every scene change in the first half an hour is accompanied by the same pleasant but, after half an hour, very irritating piece of music, is why I give this film 4 out of 5.

I suppose I'm being too fussy. I would recommend this movie to anyone (obviously over the age of 18) and it is well worth having!!
