Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Monopoly Tycoon is, put simply, a marriage between the classic board game and the city building aspects of Sim City. It's an idea that shouldn't work as well as it does. Licensed games usually don't take risks and that's what makes this one quite brilliant. Deep Red has dared to take Monopoly concepts and use them to make a game of city building, but also of property management and brutal economics, all encased in one gorgeous graphics engine.

After playing through a very detailed tutorial series of missions you'll proceed to the main game: a series of locked scenarios you unlock by successfully completing the previous one. There are three difficulty levels and you can choose to play as any of the familiar playing pieces, each with their own personality, advantages and disadvantages.

The game itself plays on a 3-D map. You can zoom in to see the wandering people and their cars, or zoom out to view the map top-down like a board game. The layout isn't like the board game, however, it's more like a city, but Monopoly conventions hold true. Each block consists of two or three coloured properties with familiar names. You can't buy these properties. You can build on any of them, owning various retail or residential buildings of varying size and height, and pay rent to the property owner, or you can engage in an auction to lease the property (for 25 years). If you lease all the properties of a colour you gain a monopoly and can build lucrative hotels and even commandeer buildings away from rivals.

The action begins in the 30s and moves all the way to the new Millennia. You'll see styles and cars all change to show this as time moves forward, which is a nice touch.

All told, Monopoly Tycoon is a must for fans of the Sim or Tycoon lines of games. It's deep, fun, has a great multiplayer option, and it has just enough Monopoly in it to be utterly charming to anyone familiar with the classic board game. Infogames didn't invent the city-building game here, but they did reinvent Monopoly for the 21st century. --Bob Andrews

3.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Good but with a fatal flaw, 22 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This game is fun and addictive but.......
when you reach the scenario objective it ends, there is no option to continue playing so just when you are about to start kicking ass its all over. Then when you complete all the scenario's you do not have the option of just playing
the game you are only able to replay the same scenario's again. There is a bonus scenario as a prize? for completing all the levels, this gives you huge amounts of money and no opposition. Now that is nearly as sad as playing the board game on your own!. Maybe if you use the online facility you can just play monopoly without any silly objectives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monopoly Tycoon, 27 Mar 2003
Monopoly tycoon is a fun, well structured game for all those future business tycoons looking for something to try out their skills on. But you don't have to be a keen business person to play by any means.
The game features a reasonable tutorial. One very impressive factor is the freedom of the 3d camera. You could take a look at the blocks from the london sky, or swing right down to street level and watch cars and pedestrians flock past you.
The game is set in London, with many features of the original monopoly board, such as chance cards, and each property as block opon which you build your hotels, apartments and loads of retail stores to suit the people living their and to bring in tourists. Apart from the very early missions, you, as a character from the monopoly board (Each with their own personality) are set out against one or more other players. You have to wisely spend your money in order to complete the objective before them, but watch out, it is very easy to fall into debt. The game also features visible auctions for the properties.

An excellent game, with few faults.

5.0 out of 5 stars The feel that you are in the game, 21 Nov 2001
By A Customer
At first I thought just another souped up monopoly game. But I was proven wrong, the game is fantastic you have a real 3d feel and a full 380 degrees rotation with zoom.
It's fantastic you can actually view the people entering buildings etc.
the graphics are extreemly smoth and the music is not too bad.
When you try and lease property it is my opinion that it nearly feels like a real auction, nail bitting stuff. And what greater pleasure but to financially ruin others .... Great.

Definatley a good buy, don't waste waiting for it to get cheaper.
