Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sampled is a compilation dedicated to unearthing the original songs that were sampled or plundered wholesale to create mainstream and cult classics like Moby's "Natural Blues" (Vera Hall's "Troubled So Hard") and Spiller's "Groovejet" (Carol Williams' "Love Is You"). A double CD of 40 tracks, Sampled is a laudable attempt to please ardent trainspotters and lovers of jazz, soul, disco, blues and contemporary dance music alike. Some of these songs are well-known, joyous slabs of melodic genius--Quincy Jones' "Summer in the City" (Nightmares on Wax's "Les Nuits") or James Brown's now infamous "Funky Drummer". Others are unfashionable and shamefully undervalued--Syl Johnson's seductive but antagonistic funk assault, "Is It Because I'm Black" (Cypress Hill's "Interlude"). Back in those Day-Glo pre-sampler days, Bob Dorough's 1960s folk song, "The Magic Number", must have seemed as playfully deep and highly skilled as anything his De La Soul admirers did on Three Feet High and Rising. This isn't surprising. For the most part, Sampled concentrates on the tracks that hip-hop producers have dug out of their crates, then sampled and stretched to make their own. However, where a lot of 1980s, 1990s and early 21st-century tracks won't stand the test of time, the songs collected here has failed to lose any of their soulful, addictive lustre. --Maxine Kabuubi

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent listening and interesting too, 31 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I was at first put off by some of the comments above, but after having bought this CD I can only recommend it. Most of the tracks were new to me as I'm not very familiar with the genre, but there are some fantastic tracks on there! Also, it's interesting to listen to how these songs have been sampled by modern-day artists. This CD is well worth the money, and I eagerly await volume 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent showcase of funk, soul and disco originals., 6 Feb 2001
By A Customer
'Sampled' is probably one of the best compliation albums I own at present, and even if old skool funk, soul and disco is not your 'thang', I am sure you will appreciate this record for what it is. It takes some of the most well known tracks in contemporary music, such as Fatboy Slim's 'Praise You', and Moby's 'Natural Blues', and unearths the classic tracks behind them, that efectively made them hits. You have the likes of Diana Ross, Chic and Isaac Hayes - classics, and once again hits in their own right. 'Sampled' honours these items of music which, until now, have been lost in music. It is an insight into the culture of sampling, and is proof that as far as music is concerned, 2001 is going to be gettin' it on with all things groovy!

2.0 out of 5 stars There are better collections than this, 24 Nov 2000
By Tk Childs "Tom C" (Oxford United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was eager to hear this collection, being a big fan of soul, funk, jazz (and occasionally disco). I also read some rave reviews both on Amazon and in the music press. Well, I was very disappointed. It's an eclectic mess of a collection, with no sense of continuity. One minute you're listening to a funk record, the next it's a folk song. Some of the better tracks have been edited, so you don't get the full flavour of them either. Many of the tracks are best forgotten, having been eclipsed by the newer versions (Spiller is a good example). Others are so awful you will wish you'd never heard these originals (eg Soup for One). My recommendation is to forget this compilation and instead to go out and buy one of the Blaxploitation compilations (which feature many of the better tracks such as Be Thankful and Expansions in their full length version). These CDs have been lovingly put together; Sampled is a cynical cashing-in exercise.
