Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the hot new handheld that runs the popular Palm OS, so it's compatible with thousands of existing applications. It is also expandable with Springboard modules that can add extra memory or a modem, or transform your Visor into an MP3 player, video game, GPS receiver and more. You can find a collection of these modules in Accessories. Plus, its fast synchronising USB connection is compatible with both the PC and Macintosh.

To set up the Handspring Visor Deluxe, it is a simple case of inserting the batteries, calibrating the touch screen, entering the date and time, connecting the included USB cradle to your PC (an optional Serial cradle is available), installing the desktop synchronisation software, and synchronising the Visor with your PC. The entire set-up process was straightforward and intuitive, requiring only about five minutes.

Fans of Palm Computing's Palm III line of connected organisers will have no difficulty using the Visor, as it runs on a licensed version of the Palm OS. All the popular Palm personal information management (PIM) applications are included and work in exactly the same way as they do on the Palm. The Visor also uses Palm's Graffiti handwriting recognition system for text entry, which takes only a few minutes to learn and a few hours of practice to master. Handspring has added to the Palm OS an advanced date book, calculator, world clock and support for floating-point math.

The Visor Deluxe comes with 8MB of RAM, providing plenty of room for thousands of addresses, to-do items and memos; hundreds of e-mail messages; and several years of appointments. It also includes a USB synchronisation cradle, two AAA batteries, a stick-on Graffiti "cheat sheet", a leather slip case, a stylus, a Handspring logo decal, a Quick Reference Guide, inserts describing accessories and cases, and a software CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes Palm Desktop Software 3.01, a software link to Microsoft Outlook, and the full-length User's Guide.

Using the Visor was intuitive and fun, just like the Palm III series organisers that it's based on. However, unlike the Palm, the Visor has an easily accessible expansion port that supports Springboard modules. For testing, we installed a modem module, an 8 MB memory module and the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf game (note that you can install only one module at a time). Installing these modules is very easy, and they can greatly increase the functionality, power and usefulness of the Visor.

Overall, the Visor is impressive. It takes the best of the popular Palm platform, and adds memory and expandability--all at a great price. --Mike Brown

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Kit !, 14 Jun 2001
By Converted (Dublin Ireland) - See all my reviews
Being a novice to PDA's I scoured the net looking for recommendations and from what I could find, the Handspring came out as one of the best.

After taking the plunge I would concur, it's a fabulous piece of kit and really simple to use from the beginning. The only annoying thing was it came with a USB cable and no serial adaptor which added an extra £30 pounds to the price. That aside, I've never been so organised and entertained at the same time. The range of software is excellent and much of it is free too.

It is also expandable unlike some of the cheaper models out there the Visor won't be obsolete in a year or so.

If you are thinking of buying your first PDA, and want a cost effecient, flexible device, this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb PDA. Cheaper than a Palm Vx, and at least as useful., 2 Nov 2000
By A Customer
A wonderfully useful device, the first PDA I've come across that I actually like enough to really make heavy use of. (I felt that my old Psion Series III was trying a little too hard to be a "real computer" to be a truly effective PDA, but PalmOS devices just don't want you to approach them that way). Ironically, though, at the heart of the Visor is about the same sort of computing power as the first Unix workstation that sat on my desk a decade ago!

The only reasons to buy a Palm Vx instead of a Visor Deluxe are the slightly tacky styling of the Visor (even in "graphite" it doesn't look as good as the sleek Palm product) and the Palm's rechargeable batteries. Against that, you can offset the Handspring's expansion bus which is already starting to host some interesting modules.

The inbuilt software is intuitive and powerful, it's easy to get to grips with Graffiti (the stylised handwriting input notation) and there is a wealth of free and commercial third party software for almost any application. PalmOS, the underlying operating environment, is a good platform on which to develop your own applications, if you're a competent C programmer.

The only real competition for Handspring (and Palm) devices is Psion's Revo - the Revo comes with more sophisticated software, but is rather more of a "miniature PC" than a PDA.

If you want a usable, compact, powerful PDA that is an adjunct to a PC, you should seriously consider a Handspring Visor, particularly if you think you might want to add interesting devices (cameras, MP3 players, infrared links etc.) to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Fantastic, 5 Jan 2001
By Rhiannon Lawler (Aylesbury, Bucks, UK) - See all my reviews
This is a very simple but yet very practical organiser - I don't know how I lived without it for so long ! I have never written in the 'Graffiti' style text that you use, and I spent about an 1hr on Xmas day playing with the demo you are given - and I haven't looked back since - it's so easy to learn ! Even if you don't quite get to grips with it, you can either buy a keyboard attachment or use the tiny on screen keyboard - fantastic !! If you get fed up organising your life you can also chill out by playing a range of nifty little games you can download for free from the web-site. I would highly recommend this product - plus they come in cool colours !
