4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, 10 April 2001
As a teacher of Scottish Gaelic in both Canada and in Scotland for over ten years I can fully recommend this CD to a beginner. It covers a range of useful vocabulary and is presented through two dialects which are commonly encountered. There are perhaps a few phrases which are unfortunately absent, but on the whole the CD presents basics very well. Particularly, it starts people off using 'Se , which is often a stumbling block for those at the earliest stages.

This is a good tool to have if you're going to go on holiday to a Gaelic-speaking part of Scotland. But why would you do that when almost all of gaelic speakers also speak English, many as their first language.

Most people who are learning Gaelic are NOT doing it because they're going on holiday, they're doing it because they want to speak it fluently. This CD will not help you learn the lanuage fluently, it will just help you with some basic vocabulary- Holiday vocabulary.

It's a good CD, though, just a shame it tries to teach you the wrong things. Vocabulary and phrases are listed along with pictures and a sound file of a Gaelic-speaker saying the word/phrase. You can record yourself saying a phrase and play it back, to see if you sound like you should. There are games as well, which help you to memorise the words.

If you're trying to learn Gaelic I would advise you to buy the Hugo book and cassettes or the 'Teach Yourself Gaelic' course. If, however, you have £25 to spare, by all means buy this to aid your vocabulary-building. I'll be selling mine when I'm done with it, it's not something you really want to spend that much money on.

2.0 out of 5 stars Simple easy to use but maybe to easy and simple...., 26 Oct 2000
By A Customer
I found this cd easy to use and as far as these things go it's quite good but i belive in this case it takes the wrong approach they seem to be using the cd as if it where someone wanting to learn a few phrases for a holiday but 99.9% of people speak scottish a second language, but if you where looking for a VERY simple start to Scottish you could do worse. Maybe written by people a bit to far south of the border.
