Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If U2 hadn't used the title already, "A Sort Of Homecoming" might have suited this, their 10th studio album. All That You Can't Leave Behind sounds, at various points, like any or all of U2's previous albums, as if the band are sending postcards back from a protracted ramble through previously conquered territories. The euphoric first single, and opening track, "Beautiful Day", reintroduced Edge's signature delay-laden guitar solos, pretty much absent since The Unforgettable Fire. Elsewhere, the gospel stylings of Rattle & Hum resurface on "Stuck In A Moment", and the deranged, Prodigy-influenced dance textures that characterised their previous album, Pop, crop up on "Elevation". None of this should be taken as suggestion that this always commendably restless group are running out of ideas. Having spent the 1990s making three of the most bizarre and adventurous albums ever delivered by a stadium rock band (the consecutive masterpieces Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Pop), it's as if they are now trying to figure out if there was one particular thing they always did best. On the evidence presented here, it's that combination of U2's facility for the epic playing alongside Bono's increasing lyrical interest in intimacy: "Walk On" and "Peace On Earth" are two of the best things he has ever written or sung. All That You Can't Leave Behind confirms that U2's laurels are continuing to make them itch. --Andrew Mueller

CD Description

Tenth studio album for the Irish rock superstars, 'All thatyou can't leave behind' is a conscious effort to move away from the 'experimental' music prevalent on both 'Zooropa' and 'Pop'. Produced by Daniel Lanois it is a more mainstream effort but still utilising some of the 'cutting edge' techniques introduced by Brian Eno. Includes the singles 'Stuck in a moment', 'Elevation' (also used in the Tombraider film) and the anthemic 'Beautiful Day' which has been co-opted by weekly football show 'The Premiership'

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to there best, original U2, 3 Mar 2001
By A Customer
What can I say? Desparate for the release date, and being in New Zealand at the time, I was waiting to get my hands on the next U2 album. Then, there it was!! AWESOME!!!! I think U2 have realised what they're best at, pleasing their huge following of fans, but at the same time, music fans in general. A difficult collaberation!! The album has gone back to the days of "Unforgettable Fire", "The Joshua Tree" and even " Rattle and Hum". I will have to go and see them for the fifth time now, and I know, as ever, I won't be disappointed!!! "Peace on Earth" lyrics are just plain haunting. The melody is like silk. "Wild honey" is a quirky little number and could be enjoyed by many varieties of music fans! "Kite" is simply great! Ofcourse, "Beautiful day" and "Stuck in a moment.." speak for themselves. In fact, the only track that I think is not up to their usual standard is "New York". It's good, but not that good!!! If you are a fan, you already have it!! If you're not, go get it. You may be pleasantly surprised!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It takes a little while (everybody, read this!), 26 Sep 2001
When I first bought this album, I have to admit I was a little disappointed. I mean, here was everyone talking about a real rock album that was reministant of the Unforgetable Fire and the Joshua Tree.

With all that hype, I was really expected something else. That was what caused my diappointment intially - the album just didn't click for the first few days!

This however is the situation all U2 fans were in I think. U see, give this album time and u will realise that it is one of the best albums that the band has ever made! I'm not joking. Just give it a little while.

Every song here is a great tune - accept maybe Grace and Peace On Earth which r average. Bono and co can never make a terrible song!

That is the amazing thing about U2, they always make good songs. I'm glad they have left the electronic experiments - about time really - Pop was the best they could ever make using the studio as an instrument.

This album is like no other because it is just so simple! Like Larry says, it sounds like 4 guys in a room making great music - thats all! Its a Band record. It took me a few days to get into it but now I listen to all the time. Must be my 50th time by now!

Every album has a theme and Bono's theme in ATYCLB is about being middle aged. Its a very personal album for him.

In Kite, he talks about leaving the world and telling his kids not to worry. In New York he talks about his mid-life crisis and how this great city helps him to escape lifes problems. Its all so beautiful!

Okay, lots of albums tell u that life itself is hard - Bono does it Stuck in a Moment and Walk on. But not many bands tell u that they too have those problems. Bono after all is just another guy out there and he tries to tell that to all of us here. Its very emotional, especially Kite.

Oh, and 2 all u guys claiming that U2's revolution is over - that they have run out of steam - here's something for u. U2 do continue the rebellion here as they show the world that in this day and age when Pop music is everywhere, 4 men from the 80's can still come out and show them all what real music is!

After all this time, they are still arguably No.1!

Trust me, if u want to have the best 60 minutes on a quiet night, even if u're feeling down, listen to this album and just float away - let U2 'take you to that other place!'

I promise u, after a few listens - U WILL LOVE IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, Best album since Achtung Baby., 10 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Fantastic stuff from a great band. Best tracks are Elevation, Kite, New York and the best track on the album, and also one of the best songs they have ever done, Walk On. I have listened to this album non-stop over a period of 4 weeks and it gets better with each listen. It has a very sudden feel to it that makes you think there maybe a lot of hit singles from the album. Walk On as I mentioned before is one of the best songs they have ever done with great lyrics and a beautiful change in the songs direction from the middle to the end. Elevation is a funky Achtung Baby style song that has a great chorus with Bono singing superbly. Kite is also full of guitars and a great middle where Bono and the Edge are soaring high above. Stuck In A Moment is a big single which will win over the biggest U2 critic, gospel driven and with a lovely sounding guitar from the edge. New York is the powerhouse of the album with its slow build up and powerful guitar bursts from the Edge. Even the weakest tracks on the album sound great, them being Grace and Peace On Earth. The whole band are on top form here from Adam Clayton's Bass playing, Larry Mullen's superb drumming, Edge's multi changing guitar sounds and Bono's fine singing. Yep I loved Pop and Zooropa but this has to be the best since Achtung Baby. If you only buy 1 Album this year this has to be it. You would be a fool to "Leave this album behind".
