Slept-On Classic, 11 Nov 2004
This is one the most under-rated rap albums of all time. With their debut album, Binary Star created a classic. The influences and styles are many and varied. The opener, 'Reality Check', has a real Mobb Deep-feel. This doesn't prepare you however for the next track, 'Conquistadors', which is my favourite on the album. This is a real fast paced track with some great rapping, and some superb scratching. Track 3, 'Solar Powered', brings the pace back down again, and is a very atmospheric and somewhat sinister track. Some high quality tracks follow, which are not quite as good as the first three but still great in their own right. Track 10, 'New Hip-Hop', has a great KRS-One sample, and is another head-nodder. The next track is the title track, and doesn't disappoint. Again, it's a great piece of hip-hop. 'Evolution of Man' is a really feel good track, with a fantastic chime sample-a beautiful track. None of the songs on this album are regarded as classics in the way that "Shook Ones Pt.2" or "C.R.E.A.M" are, but the album rises into the pantheon of create hip-hop albums because of its consistency. Each track can be described as either good or great, and it's very hard to find an album these days which doesn't contain a few fillers and skippable tunes.
