Amazon.co.uk Review

An Audience with Billy Connolly is a mid-1980s recording of one of Britain’s finest live comedians, captured in front of a celebrity audience. While always good value as a stand-up, the rather stilted format of the TV show doesn't suit Connolly as well as it might. One of the main elements of the comedian's appeal has always been his full-flight school of delivery, something that the editing and style of the programme severely undermines. Despite that, there are still enough moments of classic Connolly humour to keep fans entertained. Much of his material here is autobiographical, dealing especially with his Glaswegian childhood. Although hindsight is an uncommon luxury, it is impossible to watch his act without thinking of the revelations in wife Patricia Stephenson's biography, Billy. Not only is it hard to equate the manic comic viewed here with the depressed alcoholic of the time, but the (admittedly very funny) material concerning his relationship with his father has been given incredible added pathos by the book's admissions. There may be extra fun from spotting the awful haircuts and fashion crimes of those who passed for celebrities in 1985 but, in comparison with the countless other Connolly videos on the market (particularly the superb world tours of Scotland and Australia), An Audience with is far from essential. --Phil Udell

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything I had come to expect from the legend., 13 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Starts off very slowly, but once he gets going, is as good as any other one of his vidoes. Tells true-to-life stories in a way so that they become extremely funny. Stories about "looking for a party" and the "giant slipper adverts" along with the incontinence knicker adverts had me in stitches. Without a doubt, definetely worth the money at the above price.

5.0 out of 5 stars an audience with the Big Yin, 6 Sep 2005
This has to be one of the funniest Billy Connolly comedies Ever. Live on stage in front of a host of celebrities from the 80,s.Packed with stories from his growing up in glasgow with the parties and the priest visit to the changing of the national anthem to the archers tune. Celebs in audience include Julie walters . Robbie Coltraine ,Michael parkinson and a host of other 80,s celebs. Sometimes rude humour but then that is Billy and to be expected . An hour of pure funny entertainment from the man they call the "Big Yin"
