Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

All Saints' second album, Saints and Sinners finds them on the run from the melancholic soul-pop of their eponymous debut. Defiantly more direct and sophisticated than its predecessor, this is a resolutely upbeat affair. Fortunately rather than re-invent themselves as men-bashing R&B divas, they have chosen to stick to their usual formula: song-writer, Shaznay's helium-high voice takes centre stage, Melanie Blatt and the Appleton sisters provide fluffy and light harmonies and a string of producers including William Orbit (Madonna) deliver euphoric, technicolour grooves. The UK version includes two rather pleasant bonus tracks, "I Don't Wanna Be Alone" and "One More Tequila", but the best material appears on the first half of the album. There's nothing quite as sublime as the undeniably feel-good opener, "Pure Shores" (also featured on The Beach soundtrack), but "Distance" a bewitching combination of flamenco guitar, piano and dance-floor friendly beats comes close. Saints and Sinners doesn't exert its power in subtle ways and there are occasions when they don't quite pull off their attempts to be quirky ("Whoopin' Over You"). However there is plenty of weight and breath here, a mood and groove for every occasion, just as long as that occasion is life-affirming. In fact, Saints and Sinners sounds like someone turned the "dark" off!--Maxine Kabuubi

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly brilliant album., 19 May 2001
By A Customer
Personally I was never a fan of All Saints and didnt buy their first album. I was given this album and did not expect much more from it than overproduced girly-pop performed buy puppets. HOW WRONG I WAS!! This album is funky, original, cool and totally addictive! All Saints really do offer something different with their style of music, and I can honestly say, I cant pick a favourite track because I love every single one. There are similarities in some of the tracks to Madonna's album Music, presumably due to the William Orbit influence. But as a lifelong fan of Madonna, I can honestly say that Saints and Sinners is found in my CD player far more than any of Madonnas albums ever are. Fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine,pleasant,cool record..., 7 Oct 2003
By Ash (nice france) - See all my reviews
I've always enjoyed all saints for they really are sexy, sassy, classy, clever and cool women. And their record has the same qualities plus some of the best singles pop has yet to offer, key songs in pop history.

1.Pure shores: a feel-good opener.One of the key tracks i'm talking about.A pop masterpiece.
2.All hooked up: the lyrics may be found a little dumb, but it has great music, great attitude.Good all saints material.
3.Dreams: you should take some time to listen to this one and understand it.It takes time to unlock its secrets and fully enjoy this moody track.
4.Distance: Flamenco guitar, r'n'b,the all saints touch:an interesting moment.
5.Black coffee: God...this song is a masterpiece. One of my all-time favourites.Everything's inspiring in this song, the music, the lyrics and vocal harmonies...even the video!I cried several times listening to it(proof that it really conveys something:that's what music's about)
6.Whoopin' over you: a rich dancing track.Good.
7.I feel you: a grandiose track.Not a never ever part 2:it's a different feeling:joy.
8.Surrender: an interesting William Orbit track.Good vibes and pleasant vocals.
9.Ha ha: a song full of attitude. But well...it's obviously not the best all saints' cut. It's fine, nothing more.
10.Love is love: i was very VERY VERY surprised when i first heard it.It just doesn't fit their style.Everything about this song is fast and, well, a little ridiculous, even dumb.I only like natalie's part on this one (i'm a big fan of appleton...)
11.Ready willing and able: well...it's cool,yes,but...it could have been richer.Good ideas, but that's an undevelopped track. It's a shame, the ideas were really good.
12.Saints and sinners: Wow,some signs of originality! The all saints attitude is there along with great music, cool lyrics and clever harmonies. But given this track is kind of unconventionnal (compared to the other songs on the album, not all singles in music history!)some might skip it.
13.I don't wanna be alone:the album's getting short of breath. No surprises on this one, just that good Orbit and All saints feel.
14.One more tequila:A latin pop tune.A lot of fun but...kinda pointless.Great fun though.

You should buy this record if you like pop r'n'b with a pinch of electro and female vocal harmonies. It's also good if you enjoy the all saints vibe and attitude:they've got something i'm tellin' ya!

4.0 out of 5 stars V.GOOD, 4 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This is a great album and I am very glad I brought it. I think the best songs are 'All Hooked up(which I am surprised did not go to number 1),Love is Love ,Saints and Sinners and Surrender. I would buy this album if you are a big fan of the All saints and like 'Pure sures' and 'Black coffee'.
