This is more like it! Pure Crimson and plenty of improv!, 4 Oct 2001
If you've heard any live material from the 6-man lineup of 95-96 (B'Boom/THRaKaTTaK), "Heavy ConstruKction" will come as a surprise. Wittled down to a 4 piece, they lose none of the sponteniety of the double trio or the five ProjeKcts.Discs 1 & 2 are worth the price alone - almost 2 hours of new Crimson classics, with the odd improvisation thrown in seamlessly (always to a good audience response). The video on disc 2 (presented in Windows Media .asf format, which ought to annoy Mac owners) will also get Crimsonites drooling - a tight performance in Rome complete with a different, yet very effective, version of "Cage". Not the highspeedsonicattack we get on "VROOOM", but an easy, laid back rendition. I don't want to spoil it, but Adrian Belew does explain WHY Robert Fripp doesn't like flash photography with his true, American wit! Disc three is where the lion bears its teeth, so to speak. A WHOLE DISC of live improv that ranks well against their other improvs (ProjeKcts, THRaKaTTak). Most important in any live album is atmosphere. It has to sound as if the band are enjoying themselves as that, in turn, affects their performance and the audience's perception of it. Crimson are still entertaining and intuitive even on their bad days, so you're guaranteed another fine chapter in live Crimson. If you like this album, try the following: ProjeKcts box set (or the beginner's guide if you're a ProjeKct newbie), THRaKaTTaK, VROOOM, Absent Lovers and, of course, Discipline.
