5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Latino Beat, 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer
..Life in the Tropics, the latest in a succession of really great albums, demonstrates Russ Freeman's talent for surviving the test of time. With almost 20 years tucked under their belt and some 14 odd superb albums the boys (despite numerous band member changes) are still knocking out that great beat.

I'm quite passionate about jazz guitar and I love The Rippingtons Spanish/Latino feel. And the album does of course feature a star studded cast in support including the likes of Bob James, Peter White, Eric Marienthal and Dave Koz.

A superb album to the very last drop and the best money you'll ever spend on an cd - great boogying around the hi-fi fun !!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ripps are back on track - but different . . ., 20 Oct 2000
By GRC (Portugal) - See all my reviews
After Black Diamond and Topaz I wasn't sure I liked where Russ Freeman and the boys were going. But, even though many of the band are different, this is their best CD for a few years. Tremendous variety - from all-out "classic" Ripps sound through high-energy Latin to R 'n B. No duff tracks - some merely better than others. If you don't get up 'n boogie round the room to at least one track you should either get a decent hi-fi system or get out more ! Buy It!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled . . ., 20 Jun 2008
By Ben Phillips (Milton Keynes) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'll make this short and sweet - I'm a massive Rips fan despite wanting to smack the grin off that Jazz Cat's face for a long time, and unfortunately I think the time has come to admit that the ideas just aren't there any more for Russ and the boys. Note well - this album is NOTHING like Tourist, Monaco or St. James and they simply appear to have sold out to the radio-friendly, easy listening genre they helped to create.

There is not a single track on this album that does not sound like the one before or after it, so the whole thing just melts into a cheesy, down-tempo mock-latin sounding project. The move to the tropics from Colorado must have gone to Russ's head! Think of the tempo of Indian Summer, Tourist in Paradise, St. Tropez, Affair in San Miguel, Garden of Babylon, Urban Wanderer and this album is nowhere near as lively as these classic tracks. Fusion elements aren't in evidence here and two or three listens meant this CD went straight to a new home after my complete disappointment.

Avoid at all costs if you're a Rips fan - buy like the clappers if you like Bob James's later work or the latest 3 or 4 awful Fourplay albums.
