Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Proudly wearing their reputation as America''s "ultimate bar band", it's hardly surprising that in compiling this rarities collection, Hootie & the Blowfish invited their fan base to choose a third of the album's 15 tracks (and its cover design) by voting at the Web site of a beer company. The result is a de facto tribute to much of the band's own favourite music, from vintage staples such as Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby", "Use Me" by Bill Withers and Zeppelin's "Hey Hey What Can I Do" (13.98 percent of the virtual pub poll) through REM's "Driver 8", the Reivers' "Araby" and "Almost Home" (14.24percent) to seemingly improbable choices such as an unplugged rendition of Tom Waits' "I Hope I Don't Fall in Love with You", Vic Chestnutt's "Gravity Of The Situation" and the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (13.11 percent). Even on Kim Richey's countrified "Let Me Be Your Man" (the poll topper at 15.47 percet), frontman Darius Rucker and company display an uncanny ability to unify--and homogenise--seemingly disparate material into their own endlessly bubbly brew. --Jerry McCulley

CD Description
Still entirely comfortable with their reputation of being the ultimate bar band despite having released a debut that sold around 15 million copies, Hootie & The Blowfish regroupedfor their fourth album with a covers record featuring rarities and previously unreleased material. Hipsters may sneer at the unassuming musical delivery and Joe Six-Pack personae, but the band's dedication to its fans extended to spearheading an Internet campaign that found voters picking a third of the songs on this collection.
Of the five songs picked by web fiat, artists who get the Hootie treatment include Led Zeppelin (a mandolin-driven "Hey Hey What Can I Do"), The Smiths (a note-perfect "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want"), and the New Grass Revival (a harmony-laden "LetMe Be Your Man"). The Hootie selections that round out thissurprisingly diverse bag include R.E.M., whose "Driver 8" is given a dirge-like arrangement, and a punky rendition of The Reivers' "Araby" that offers some redemption. Darius Rucker's soulful baritone continues to keep the Blowfish afloat and is best utilised on a rich reading of Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby", complete with Jordanaires-like harmonising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collected! Breathing! Shining!, 18 Jan 2001
By A Customer
From "Fine Line" to "Use Me" fifteen gems all worth listening to again & again & again....The cover of the Smiths track "Please, Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" is simple and outstanding. An American band paying tribute to Morrisey & Co; Who would have thought it. "Musical Chairs" was an average CD for Hootie & Co. but this collection of covers see's them climbing upwards. Live the band are excellent; you can't take anything away from them. Hopefully, this will see their next set of original studio compositions reach new heights. Will they be able to beat Cracked Rear View; difficult but possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys know how to perform . . ., 9 Oct 2005

Hootie and the Blowfish have put out some great, original albums. Anyone that has heard them live knows that they put on quite a performance, of their own material as well as covers of songs by other artists. Previously, these great covers could only be enjoyed by lucky concert goers. This album brings some of their best covers to CD and does it well. By covering such a wide variety of artists and adding their own touches, I've come to appreciate the band more than I did for their original material alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cover album you'll ever hear, 8 Jan 2001
By A Customer
All of the tracks are covers of other artists songs. While this can somtimes lead to disaster - Hootie & The Blowfish have done a great job of choosing what songs to cover. Half of the tracks on this album were chosen by the fans themselves, which doesn't happen very often when an album is created - and i'm glad to see that all of the tracks that i voted for were included. You may not have neard of any of the songs by their original artists, but that doesn't mean that they aren't brilliant - I'd have to say that this album contains some better material than their previous two offerings - which were good, but this is just better!!!
