4.0 out of 5 stars T.M.G. Create your Family Tree, 20 Oct 2002
By A Customer
I have purchased TMG Family Tree Silver edition. I would agree with other reviewers that the "Reference Manual" is too large for the average home user to printout. However I have printed off the Tutorial & User guide, which has proven very usefull.
Inevitably mistakes are made when you first start using the programe but with the help of the users guide and the programes own "sample" family tree it soon becomes apparent what to do.
Printing name lists and family charts are easy enough and can be customised to suit your own requirements. The narrative print out selections are very good.
As far as exporting or importing other data etc I cannot comment on as I have not had any requirement to do so nor have I tried to use the photo input facility.
Comparing it with the "Softkeys" Family Tree programe it is far more forgiving when it comes to editing out any errors that may have crept in ie. spelling mistakes or incorrect date data etc.
Free updates are available from "whollygenes.com"
Overall I am quite impressed with the programe and would recomend it to any one just starting. But do print off the "Tutorial & User guide" and work through the tutorial.

3.0 out of 5 stars New Family Tree Writer, 11 Nov 2001
By Richard Preston (Wiltshire England) - See all my reviews

The product is very reasonably priced, and it allows you to produce extremely professional charts, especially for pedigree and ancestors.
The biggest single problem is the fact that it does not come with a written manual. Printing the help manual out would run literally into hundreds of pages!
So the way you learn is by using it!
By persevering I soon found that this is a very detailed tool I would imagine professional Genealologists would use it. Just about any family relationship can quickly be entered into the date base.
To those "computor experts" this is not a up to date program, it is has the annoying habit of scrambling the machine screen view each time you add data. The overall layout is however pleasing, three simple overview screens being the main drivers for the program.
Somewhat frustrating is the fact that the Silver Edition has only limited standard displays that you can print out. You are recommended to buy the Gold addition which is about four times the price!
Would I buy it again?
Must admit its addictive, picking it up as you go along makes you understand it not take it for granted. You can export to most other programs, and as an unorganised person it has managed to structure me so that my work is logically set out and researched!
So the answer is yes - but be prepared to practice first before getting straight into your tree generation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not import from PAF, 2 Jan 2002

I risked my money on this because it said it would import directly from PAF format. However it did not work with PAF files produced in the latest version. I had seen an evaluation that suggested this software had a lot of worthwhile features which is why I tried it but I was not impressed by the look and feel. I still prefer Personal Ancestral File (which is free).

It is true that you can export to GEDCOM from Personal Ancestral File and then import from GEDCOM but that means you lose formatting of notes. My notes include a lot of census notes which are formatted for readability and once that formatting is lost is becomes very difficult to read.

For me any program worth buying has to be an improvement on Personal Ancestral File. Two possible areas that could be improved are the HTML output and the print output. When I find a program that provides that and allows me to import from PAF without losing any formatting I will buy it.
