Amazon.co.uk Review

A movie's lasting value can often be measured by its influence in the years and decades following its original release, and on that basis Run Silent, Run Deep is certainly a classic of sorts. It remains one of the seminal World War II submarine pictures, and its intelligent script and tautly executed action are clearly echoed in such later submarine dramas as Das Boot and especially Crimson Tide, which borrows liberally from this 1958 film.

In one of his best and final roles (he appeared in only four films after this), Clark Gable plays a submarine captain without a command, having been saddled with a desk job after his previous ship was destroyed due to his overzealous pursuit of the enemy in dangerous Japanese waters. He finally gets another boat--this time with a vigilant first officer (Burt Lancaster), who stands poised to assume command if Gable puts his crew in unnecessary danger. The tension and mutual respect between these two principled men is superbly written and directed (Robert Wise was just two years away from his triumph with West Side Story), and the crucial inclusion of a strong supporting cast (including Jack Warden and Don Rickles) enhances the movie's compelling authenticity. Based on a novel by former submarine commander Edward L. Beach, Run Silent, Run Deep is rousing entertainment with the added benefit of paying honourable tribute to the men who navigated through the most frightening and claustrophobic channels of the Pacific cinema. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars The original submarine movie, 7 Sep 2000
By A Customer
As submarine suspence movies go, this one is one of the originals, and still as thrillingly exciteing as when it was first released in 1958. The film has been said to have been the inspiration for Crimson Tide (Gene Hackman et. al), but in my personal opinion the original is still the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars "What is that sir, I can't make it out?", 20 May 2005

Commander Richardson (Clark Gable) loses his submarine and crew to the Japanese while trying to attack the Momo in the Bongo Straits. After pining about it behind a desk he forces the department to give him a new sub. The condition is that the second in command is competent. This is all well and fine except the second in command Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Burt Lancaster) was to be the next captain of the ship and resents being subjugated.

They constantly drill for fast dives and quick torpedo shots. Yet the first chance at a Japanese submarine and he sneaks away. What is Commander Richardson up to? Lieutenant Bledsoe has his suspicions and so do we.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Submarine movie !, 10 Jun 2006

Robert Wise author of such wonderful classic musicals as "West Side Story" and " The Sound of Music was also the director of this suspenseful war film, one of the best in that sub-genre of Submarine movies! Starring Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable as the veteran Sub Captain, "RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP" reveals some interesting similarities with the classic "Mouitiny on the Bounty" plot but this time with a simpatetic Captain that in the end comes off rigth. Great actors, good story filled with suspense and dramatic action this is a 50ths classic not to be missed!
