Amazon.co.uk Review
Although Rick Wakeman has recorded an enormous number of solo projects, this multi-region DVD-plus-CD set Rick Wakeman 2000--Live in Concert must surely be the best in terms of sheer value, quite apart from the fact that the performance is very good. Even long after the glory days of Yes and his grandiose solo albums of the 1970s Wakeman, the inventor of rock keyboards (before him there were pianists and organists, while after him there were programmers), remains a consummate performer. Taken from one of his one-man shows, in which he mixes musical items from his entire career with some expertly delivered anecdotes, there's something in this bumper parcel to please every fan. The dozen tracks on the DVD include extracts from his solo albums Henry, Arthur, Journey, some Yes music, the brilliant (and hilarious) "Nursery Rhyme Concerto" and much more, while his story about the theatre organ in Seattle is alone worth the price of the set. The extra audio CD features all the music on the show, while the DVD itself has six extra audio-only tracks plus a very funny biography and a photo gallery. --Roger Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Rick Wakeman at his versatile best !, 14 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Having attended one of Rick's 2000 concerts I was looking forward to seeing this DVD and I was not disappointed with it. With such a repertoire of music it must have been difficult to decide what to include and what to miss out. However Rick has struck a good balance with a mixture of his early works from the Six Wives and King Arthur through to Return and Preludes with a good sprinkling of Yes classics thrown in as well. His humour came across not only in his stories and anecdotes but also in his Nursery Rhyme Concerto, the highlight of which must be 'Twinkle Twinkle' played in the Les Dawson style ! The haunting 'Children of Chernobyl' clearly expresses the sadness of that event, a mood which Rick's music reflects. It was also interesting to listen to some of the earlier works played on more modern instruments, even Jane Seymour where Rick has sampled some of the great church organs to produce an authentic cathedral sound. The DVD contains a wide variety of music from classical to the Beatles, all given the Wakeman treatment, demonstrating his ability to play any type of music in any style.

One thing the DVD gives you that you don't get at the concert is a good view of Rick's 'fingers in action'. Surely there can't be a faster or more talented keyboard player in the world ? I was able to listen to the DVD with the surround sound on and I found the quality excellent. Although I am a Wakeman fan, I don't automatically like all of his stuff, however,if you've never been to a Rick Wakeman Concert, I recommend that you buy this DVD and see what you've been missing. With a CD of the music thrown in for good measure, this is a bargain purchase !

4.0 out of 5 stars Wakeman proves he hasn't lost his touch in this great DVD/CD, 13 Nov 2000
By A Customer
A great value DVD with a free CD. With great sound & picture quality this DVD shows off the true talent that Rick has. His older more relaxed approach to his music is not to everyones taste with an enphasis on his classical piano/harpsicord sound but he proves that his fingers are as nimble as ever. The sampled version of Jane Seymour lacks the originals power but was a good attempt at creating that Catherdal organ sound on stage. Ricks skillfully delivers his humorous anecdotes between tracks but the humour may wear off with repeated viewing. A very enjoyable DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait, 16 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Having been to the concert in Marlborough when it was recorded I have waited eagerly for the release of this DVD and it was well worth it. An excellent perormance by Rick with his normal selection of good music and good humour. I agree wholeheartedly with the comments above about the Nursery Rhyme Concerto - has to be heard to be believed - very funny. The quality of the DVD is excellent and does the recording justice. The audio CD is a bonus and well worth having. Strongly recommended.

This is one of Rick Wakeman's quieter live outings. I didn't actually see the 2000 gig live but did see a few around that period and they really were marvellous... Read more
