Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
With each new release of Photoshop, Adobe manages both to satisfy the expectations of existing users and to pull a few magic features out of its hat. Version 6 is no exception. Powerful vector editing and masking, improved layer controls, layer styles, incredible typographic control, new web publishing tools and a cleaner more accessible interface are already making version 5.5, itself a groundbreaker, look like ancient history. Photoshop's new vector features provide yet more control when compositing photographic images. You can use the vector drawing tools simply to create polygons and custom shapes, but they can also act as layer clipping paths--vector masks that hide or reveal image areas in underlying layers. Editable layer effects like drop shadow and glow were introduced in version 5.5, in version 6 they have been renamed layer styles. New options include satin, stroke and colour, gradient and pattern overlay. The layer styles dialogue box provides much more control--Bevel and Emboss has five style options as well as adjusters for technique, depth, direction, size, soften, angle, attitude, gloss, contour, highlight mode, opacity--and that's not all of them. And as the name suggests, Layer Styles can easily be saved and applied to other layers. You can enter and edit text directly onto the layer and set style attributes from the new tool options bar. Photoshop 6 seems to have benefited from some of InDesign's superb typographic tools, with character and paragraph palettes providing precise control. Web imaging tools have been revamped, with layer-based slicing now available from within Photoshop itself and a major overhaul of ImageReady introducing weighted optimisation, rollover styles and tweened animation. If you want the best image-editing software that money can buy, look no further. For users of 5.5 there never was a more compelling reason to upgrade. --Ken McMahon

5.0 out of 5 stars Adobe do it again, 25 Jun 2001
By A Customer
To say Adobe have ruined this version of Photoshop is very unfair. To pick up on the text tool comment made, the text tool has actually much better and the resizing of the text once it has been rendered is amazing and matches in with the dpi of the whole image. Another brilliant feature is the "save for web". This save option allows you to compress images very easily into a GIF format and gives it the optimal resolution for use on the web to minimise down load time. I would say this product is a must for any serious web designer or any digital photographer. With other graphics software they overcomplicate its use with this tool it could not be easier to use and once you have used one version of Photoshop you will find it easy to use any version.

4.0 out of 5 stars PhotoShop 6.0 is excellent, 28 Mar 2002
By A Customer
PhotoShop 6.0 is indeed an excellent image editing and manipulation tool. The possibilities are too numerous to mention. I thoroughly recommend doing all the boring stuff and actually taking the time to read the user guide alongside a good tutorial book.
I do have one little niggle though and that is the inability to print multiple images onto one page (easily). Yes you can do it by re-sizing your canvas and dropping your images on and then arranging but there are easier ways to do it than that (E.g. Paint Shop Pro 6.0 - Print Multiple Images option). Please don't read this and let it put you off - Adobe PhotoShop has far too much to offer to let a little thing like that put you off.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Software... but doesn't come with any help!, 19 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Photoshop 6.0 is an industry-standard must-have.

I bought this book to help me as a Computer Arts student at my University. The biggest down-side to this software is that it doesn't show you properly how to do anything!

I can't even draw a proper line with Photoshop! If you're unpatient like me, you'll have trouble with this software.

I bought 3D Studio Max, and the Online Help is really good, but Photoshop is difficult to get to grips with.

The Online Help site is unorganized and you cannot easily navigate your way through it. I was left with no where to learn the software once I bought it, so you should consider buying some proper Tutorial-style books through Amazon, or your local bookstore as well.

You'd think Adobe could come up with a better Online site since they create professional software that deal with websites, but this is not the case here.
