Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

While the scruffbag British punk scene was fairly contemptuous of anything which had preceded it--a kind of peasants' revolt against the haughty complacency of rock music's fat-cat aristocracy ("No Elvis, Beatles or The Rolling Stones" shouted The Clash)--some punk bands on the other side of The Pond still managed to look presentable, remain non-political and maintain a certain respect for good old-fashioned pop values. Not only did Blondie have a singer (Debbie Harry) who was much better looking than Charlie Harper of the UK Subs, they were also one of those New Wave combos unwilling to consign pop history to the punk censorship bonfire. Blondie Is The Name Of A Band (an early band slogan urging fans to look beyond the peroxide pin-up frontperson) captures the band on the very eve of their international breakthrough. A 1978 live recording from the popular German TV rock show Musikladen, it illustrates just how much of their brusque power-pop was honourably indebted to Tamla, Merseybeat and even Buddy Holly (witness the cover of "I'm Gonna Love You To"). Even if the running time is a mere 30 minutes (but what a 30 minutes, "Picture This", "Denis", etc.) and the sound quality barely an improvement on medium-wave radio, there is ample compensation on offer. After all, this enhanced two-CD package contains the entire Musikladen TV performance in quick-time video format. --Kevin Maidment

4.0 out of 5 stars A great chance to *see* Blondie perform!, 7 Feb 2002
This 2 disc collection features 10 songs recorded from a live Blondie concert on a German music show. It seems to have been recorded somewhen between Plastic Letters and Parallel lines, so it's a great chance to hear all your favourites from the gruop's first two albums being performed live - on other live albums, many of these songs tend to be left out in favour of Heart Of Glass and other later hits. I think it's fair to say that Blondie were still in the process of perfecting their live act at this time. This compilation has a raw, punky feel to it, which isn't really a bad thing. Unfortunately, the recording quality is not great (TV quality, of course!). However...the discs' most important feature more than makes up for this. If you have a PC, you can watch video footage of the whole concert in Quicktime (included)! Again, the image quality is poor, but that's to be expected from a recording which is over twenty years old. Standout tracks are (in my opinion): Denis, In The Sun and Kung Fu Girls, in which Debbie even does a sort of Kung Fu kick! It's worth buying the album just to hear her screaming Chinese at the start of this song - it is definitely a fitting end for this concert.

I do have a few complaints - the filming is dreadful, with the camera changing perspective too often and seemingly at random. It misses Debbie in some of the best moments of the concert (fortunately not the Kung Fu kick!), and, perhaps worse still, shows the wrong band members when the credits roll at the end! Debbie forgets some of the best lines in Kung Fu girls, and the recording levels aren't set very well, meaning she is drowned out in some of the other tracks. All the same, overall this 2 disc collection is excellent value for money - not just a short live recording but also a video concert!

In cae you're wondering, the songs do play as CD tracks, but to get the most out of this one you will need a PC with a CD-ROM drive. You will also need to install QuickTime - version 4 is included.
