Amazon.co.uk Review

So you've sat avidly in front of the television screaming at the contestants of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Of course, with you sitting comfortable at home with your cup of tea in hand, the pressure isn't as great, and of course you've already proved to yourself that you could have won the million pounds months ago, well now is your chance, for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has now come to that beige box in the corner of the room.

With all the fanfare, Chris Tarrant's voiceover and a plethora of questions to challenge you, it's the chance any avid quiz expert has been looking for to final put their critics to rest.

Dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's, the game is an exact replica of the television show. And yes before you ask, Chris Tarrant does make sure that "It is your final answer" and that you "are sure" you've made the right choice.

As in the TV game show you have the option to ask the audience, phone a friend and play the 50:50 cards, and just like the real McCoy, the audience do get it wrong and your friends don't have a clue.

With multiplayer options allowing you to practice the fastest finger, head to head competition and teamwork, this game will allow you to drag the whole family into the game.

Surprisingly challenging and pressure building--you can't skip the video sequences, nor Chris Tarrant's voiceovers--this game is great if you have any inclination towards the quiz genre. If you are a hardened fan of the television series then this however, will be more than your cup of tea, allowing you to finally take the seat and try and become a virtual millionaire.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ummm... Useless "Phone-a-Friend"s!, 22 May 2001
By A Customer
If you are an ardent Chris Tarrant fan, and like to hear him say exactly the same things over and over again (with his trademark "Ummm" finding many annoying spots in the CD script), you'll love it.

If, like me, you like the format of the game but have a word or two to say in criticism about Tarrant's style of presenting, you might want to buy yourself a pair of earplugs while playing this game (although the musical score is superb).

The format for the single player game follows exactly the same as that of the TV game, except that the "Phone-a-Friend" lifeline is (in my experience so far of the game) 8 times out of 10 wholly useless. Most of my Phoned Friends sound really phoney (sorry!) and I've had many more "I don't know, Chris! [f/b hangup]" and wrong answers suggested than correct answers!

Okay, it's your own fault for not knowing the answer, but if any of these people were my Phone-a-Friends in real life, I'd be very worried.

The "Ask the Audience" lifeline is very well done - apparently it's a survey of 100 random people's answers to the question - and sometimes it's too close to call.

The multiplayer options offered are, on the whole, good. The only remark I'll make is about the Fastest Finger First option. It could be a little more like the TV format - all the player does is press a button when the correct combination is showing on screen. It's also difficult to actually read the question before the (rather rapid) scrolling starts!

All that said, the game is worth buying - it's cheaper than losing £1 every time in the pub quiz version, and you get to have your high scores on a cool scoreboard. Very satisfying!

I'd have expected more than 1,000 questions in the game, so I hope that an Extra Question Pack is released before I get repeat questions!

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb family entertainment!, 26 Nov 2000
This game about as close as you could get to the real thing without them having actually to pay you the money or get you on TV ...

Seriously, we keep on going back to it. It's great when you've got friends round too. The audio-visuals are superb and it comes complete with the annoying Chris Tarrant and a huge bank of questions. Best played on a big screen with a decent hifi plugged in, some Kellogg's Temptations and a large bottle of wine.

Downsides? Your phone-a-friends are good, but not entirely realistic, and audience response doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the difficulty of the question. And I can't fathom out what the multi-player options are for. But these are pretty minor gripes, really.

Definitely not for people who like zapping aliens etc., but worth the money. Go for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging and Fun,as well as educational!, 29 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this game,I have won the Million pounds several times..I like the no time limit on the questions, the game goes a bit to slow at times, the stops in between questions slows the excitment down, and there is no audience...and worse of all...No Chris Tarrant! But it is a nice game,it's better than the Millionaire PC game here in US,I recommend this to any triva fan or regular viewer of the show! I look forward to getting the 2nd edition...Final Answer...
