Synopsis
EYE OF THE BEHOLDER is based on the acclaimed 1980 novel by Marc Behm, concerning a British intelligence agent, The Eye (Ewan McGregor), who is assigned to follow the trail of Joanna Eris (Ashley Judd), a mysterious woman who is accused of blackmailing a government official's son. The Eye becomes obsessed with Joanna, following her even when he discovers that she is a psychopathic killer. As the two head toward an unavoidable confrontation, The Eye begins to see Joanna as a misunderstood and troubled individual whose actions can, and should, be excused and forgiven.

From the Back Cover
McGregor stars as 'the eye' an isolated British intelligence officer assigned to the case of the enigmatic and mysterious Joanna Eris. Joanna is accused of blackmailing a senior British Official but hs eis more than just a blackmailer. As the Eye begins his task of shadowing her he discovers that she is capable of more than just extortion. A master of disguise she is also a lone killer who anticipates his every move and stays one step ahead.

The closer the Eye gets to Joanna's life the more dangerous his fantasy becomes. Who is more dangerous the hunter or the hunted?

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and vastly underrated film, 2 Mar 2005
By Gs Greaves "gavinmbm" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Eye Of The Beholder is a film I chanced across a couple of years ago in a Global video store.

After watching it the first time I rented it another 3 times before finally buying the rental version form the store!

Starring Ashley Judd and Ewan Macgregor, this is a tale of obsession, irrational obsession, of loss and love. It's a story of people, of scars, of life and survival. It's one of the most amazing films I've ever seen. Not just because of the grade A acting and direction, but also as a technical achievenment.

If you're an admirer of David Fincher's elaborate camera pans and trickery, you might also like to watch this, even as a purely technical film it's remarkable. The fades, editing and camerawork is utterly masterful. The soundtrack is perfect. It's an experience more than a mere story. I cannot reccomend this DVD enough.

For those who have ever felt loss, this is a movie that can touch you and inspire you with Hope.

"I wish you love."

5.0 out of 5 stars A hauntingly beautifull film, 23 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I was a bit sceptical about this film when I first went to see it, as despite the hype surrounding his performance in 'Trainspotting', I'm less than convinced that Ewan Mcgreggor is actually any good. However, by the time the film finished my fears had been proved unfounded. Instead I left the cinema feeling overwhelmed by what I had seen, I was genuinely moved. This is a film which is basically about obsession and what it can do to people. But it is also so much more, it is one of the most tender love stories I've ever seen. It's a haunting tale of lonliness, of two people needing each other, being so close, but never quite touching. For a tragic love story, it is in many ways far more tragic then say Romeo and Julliet. This is a film i must have spent days thinking about trying to understand, there are so many levels to it. If you want a film that you can easily get into, then not give a second thought to, see 'Batman and Robin', If you want a film that will engage you and leave you pondering its meaning weeks later, see 'Eye of the Beholder'.

I loved this movie. It is not your run of the mill american movie, the story is different, the acting is exelent as is the direction. I plan on watching it again, many times.
