How it works
The Rosetta Stone's Dynamic Immersion method works by simulating the natural language learning process we all experienced as children. No translation. No memorization. No drills or lists. With instruction exclusively in the target language, you start thinking in the new language from the very first lesson. The association of pictures, native speaker voices and texts allows you to master basic vocabulary quickly. And this in turn acts as a foundation on which to build words, phrases, sentences, and grammatical structures, still in the target language only.

Within each lesson, choose from a variety of different activities that concentrate on listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking or writing:

Dynamic Immersion teaches you to link speech directly with meaning. Match the spoken phrase and the image correctly and the meaning is clear. No translation or memorization. The words have meaning. The image has a name.

Reading comprehension parallels the comprehension of speech. The Rosetta Stone develops reading skills by presenting written text without spoken-language support. Match words to image and the computer verifies the meaning.

Speaking a new language is the learner's most rewarding challenge.

Speech Recognition records your voice and plays it back for comparison with the voice of the native speaker. A graded meter quickly assesses your proficiency and a voiceprint analyzes your pronunciation in detail.

Dictation uses the computer to check your written work for accuracy. Click on the picture. Write what you hear. The program indicates errors and allows you to correct your work before you proceed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 7 Feb 2007
I'm 13 and I've been using this program alone at home, without a tutor or any other learners, for 6 months now; it is amazing! Because there is no use of English at all, at first it is just guess work. However, if you have the perseverance to keep on with it, everything gets easier, and you find that things really stick in your head *as themselves* because you associate them straight with the pictures. It's not like learning French at school where you're always dependant on 'sale means dirty' etc. It's so much easier. Plus it's just like a game and really fun!

I have learnt so much, people cannot believe when I tell them. I am 3/8 of the way through and I can already do comparisons, descriptions, which/where/what, shapes, plurals, past/future, absolutely loads!! i could say (if i wanted to hehe) 'who is outside?' 'two fat old men with white hair are outside. they're eating bread underneath a big umbrella' and loads more.

There are lots of options: tests with recorded scores, timers, guided lessons. It's true all the lessons are of the same mould so i suppose you might get bored, but I haven't. Also, flicking between scripts is so easy. It has traditional, simplified and pinyin all right there. The speakers are great. They go slow enough so that you can pick out each word, but at a feasible pace. there are men and women and a range of voices so that you get used to slight variation. The voice recognition is good. It's sometimes unreliable but most of the time it works quite well, and you can slow the voices down.

It also comes with a booklet with all the lessons laid out. The help section is clear and useful. It doesn't teach you actually how to write the characters so you have to have another program for this (I use estroke). Overall, I definately recommend! This has made my dream of learning mandarin come true. =D
