Leif Ove Andsnes is one of my favourite pianists and he manages to capture the haunting, lilting, sometimes light, sometimes tragic sense of Janacek's solo piano music. For those who only know Janacek through his operatic and large scale orchestral works this CD will be a very pleasant revelation as it demonstrates the composer's great skill in writing modern yet melodic music for the piano. Some of the works are imbued with Janacek's grief at the loss of his daughter who died at the age of 21 - he had already lost a son at the age of two. And yet other works are decidedly cheery, evoking the Moravian landscape that the composer knew and loved so well.

This is a superb coupling of composer and performer and is highly recommended. A bargain price too!
