Amazon.co.uk Review
Those mad about Cesaria Evora will need no persuading to buy this record; those not yet smitten have a tremendous treat in store. I listened to it with tears rolling down my cheeks: partly because it reflects the glorious rawness of her art before the big studios got at her, but mainly because it evokes her anarchic spell on stage. Here we eavesdrop on a magic night in 1993, with the Parisian crowd going wild, the Barefoot Diva fooling about between songs and her original backing group in fabulous form. Singing in the Portuguese Creole of Cape Verde, with an accompaniment that crosses fado with tango, she delivers a knockout selection of the aptly-named "morna" songs for which she is famous. What is it about her voice? A lazy grace, a massive simplicity, a way of swooping up to the note, or sinking down onto it; a wonderful sense of timing, and absolute authority. If this disc fires you, dig deeper:
Miss Perfumado was the record which put her on the map in 1992, and it has the original versions of many of the songs on this CD, plus translations of their poignant lyrics. --
