Amazon.co.uk Review
With their esoteric artwork and brilliantly off-the-wall rhetoric (they claim to oppose "normal existence" and "rose-tinted revivalism"), Sheffield's Action Spectacular are more art-pop concept than unassuming indie combo; more Liechtenstein than Llama Farmers. Naturally, such pretension would smack of empty braggadocio were the accompanying tunes not equally well considered. Yet, by and large, they are; with "Music in the Sun" sighing and swaying like a woozy
Beta Band and "Roxy Music" sporting a lorry-load of excellent
Eno-esque effects. Though their influences may snap and crackle clearly throughout
From Here On In It's A Riot, Action Spectacular's saving grace is their boundless imagination. "Every Second Counts", for example, puts a curiously pastoral spin on the
Happy Mondays' baggy blueprint, while "General Lee" mixes its musical metaphors like an even bolder
Badly Drawn Boy. This is an audacious debut. --
