5.0 out of 5 stars Hasse Flute Music, 29 Oct 2003
By Dr. A. Large - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Johann Adolf Hasse was a comtemporary of the Grauns, the Bendas, CPE Bach and Quantz, but chose to remain employed at the Saxony Dresden Court until the Seven Years War devasted the economy of Saxony. The instrumental output of Hasse is fairly limited as he was primarily a composer of opera and vocal works. His compositions feature the flute prominantly.
This CD features four flute concertos, all small in scale with only one having a viola part so they are true chamber works and are played here by a suitably small ensemble with harpsichord continuo. They are light, galant works for the most part showing an Italian influence and certainly look forward beyond the Baroque. Graceful and charming but without the intensity of CPE Bach's work, and significantly shorter.
A variety of chamber pieces fill the disc - a flute sonata, a trio sonata for two flutes and B.C. and a Sinfonia a 5 for two flutes, two violins and B.C.. The sonatas are four movement works reminiscent of Telemann, perhaps. The sinfonia is an elegant, lively five movement suite.
The period instrument Hannoversche Hofkapelle has a pleasant, light sound. The period flutes and very small ensemble suit the music perfectly. The music is perhaps less remarkable than the disc of Franz Benda's music recorded more recently by Hannoversche Hofkapelle and Laurence Dean but still this make for a rewarding 72 minutes of listening.
