Product Description

CD Description
Despite a four-year hiatus between albums, in which grunge,Brit-pop and electronica defined popular music, the Beatlesremain Karl Wallinger's muse. EGYPTOLOGY continues his Fab Four fixation, with the Welsh songsmith's solitary studio tinkering yielding tunes like "Call Me Up", with an intro recalling the Beatles' "Good Morning" and baroque touches a la "Penny Lane". But Wallinger's most compelling moments are personal ones.
The beautiful choral rounds of "Interlude" segue into the smashing "Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb" (written after his mother's death) and the lo-fi slant of "Hercules" (an ode to Kurt Cobain). Great imagery coupled with solid hooks and great dynamics easily make "Mummy" Wallinger's finestmoment. Add the brass and echoey vocals of the Lee Hazlewood-flavoured "Vanity Fair" to the mix, and EGYPTOLOGY becomesthe perfect pop package.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb album, 18 Oct 2002
By D. Vass (Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This album has not a single duff track on it. Play it in the car
and those long boring drives, will be a whole lot more fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing World Party - Mostly, 12 Dec 2000
By Duncan Worrell (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When this album came out several years ago (I'm not sure what the other reviewer is talking about when he says this album is "new"), I was disappointed. It was not a patch on the raw "Private Revolution", the strong "Goodbye Jumbo" or the excellently produced "Bang!". I hope they havn't gone the way of many bands and look forward to "Dumbing Up" popping through my door in a few days time.

The best track is easily "She's The One" which deservedly won best single last year through Robbie Williams' almost identical rendition.

"Hercules" and "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb" are bad and I can't help thinking that each track was rushed off, although the album was written over a long time span. It lacks structure.

Don't get me wrong here, there are some good tracks, but not particularly good World Party. It was always going to be difficult to follow their previous three classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars world party back to thier best!, 29 Sep 2000
By dave_massey@hotmail.com (Glossop Derbyshire England) - See all my reviews
I was one of a fortunate crowd of 400 or more who watched and listened to the most exiting revamp of world party. They were live on stage at the student union in manchester on 27/09/00.The tracks off the new cd Eygyptology were mind blowing back to goodbye jumbo days(bye far thier greatest achievment to date)and one which has kept me going to all thier manchester gigs.I was so engulfed in the new tracks, it was as though i had written the lyrics myself.if you like to mellow out and get into the vibe this is definately another Karl wallinger gold medal album!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good development from the previous albums
Many good albums have a common theme which makes them samey. This does not apply to this great collection of pop songs. Read more
