4.0 out of 5 stars Filming the Unfilmable, 22 Mar 2009
By Bob Salter "Sandman" (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews
Hats off to John Sturges for attempting the almost impossible task of making a film based on Ernest Hemingways much loved tight little characterisation novella. The screeplay was adapted by Peter Viertel and starred Spencer Tracy as the old Cuban fisherman Santiago. Fred Zinneman and Henry King also worked uncredited on the film. Locations around the Western hemisphere were used.

"The Old Man and The Sea"(58) concerns an old Cuban fisherman who is down on his luck and alone in the world save for a small boy who loves him and believes in him. The old man heads back out to the ocean where he hooks a giant Marlin. A fish of fishes. The two then pit there strength against each other in a titanic battle. Both the man and marlin show great nobility of spirit, both battling to the very limit of their endurance. After an epic struggle across the ocean the great fish is eventually beaten, but on the return journey is eaten by sharks. The exhausted fisherman returns to his crude hut and dreams of Lions. The boy still loves him and believes in him. The flickering flame of hope remains.

It is easy to be critical of this film. Some of the boat scenes that were filmed in a studio tank are unconvincing, although Tracy and Sturges actually endured great hardship themselves filming in a real boat out on the ocean. Tracys performance appears to have been influenced by method acting which was popular at that time. He was actually nominated for a beat actor oscar. He was perhaps not as convincing in the role of a Cuban as he was as a Portuguese fisherman in "Captains Courageous"(36), but in that film he had black and white film to disguise his obvious European ancestry. Tracy looked an old man before his time and he looks suitably strained and gaunt in the role. He was one of cinemas enduring actors and it was perhaps appropriate that he played a character that endures through all.

The film is certainly not a classic, but I feel it was a very brave attempt and deserves full credit for that. If one overlooks some of the flaws it is an enjoyable cinematic experience. Recommended.
