Amazon.co.uk Review
Thomas, as anyone familiar with the eponymous, wildly popular TV series knows, is a very useful engine, and never more so than in his first theatrical release, which was a modest box-office success. On a tank filled with little more than pluck, determination and goodwill, Thomas sets out full-steam ahead on a danger-fraught mission to help his friend Mr Conductor. The conductor's stash of magic gold dust has run out, leaving him stranded on the Island of Sodor with Junior, his flaky cousin, and Lily, a little girl enlisted to lift her grandfather out of a funk on nearby Muffle Mountain. When Thomas bravely chugs beyond his hometown tracks' buffers with Lily aboard, he's transported to Muffle Mountain's secret railway and to Lady, a long-lost steamer whose legendary engine makes her more powerful than Diesel, the train-yard bully. Together, Thomas and Lady lead Diesel on a chase that causes a bridge to collapse, taking the dastardly Diesel down with it. Most impressive about the movie is its marquee names: Alec Baldwin works magic as the dutiful worrywart Mr Conductor, Mara Wilson is Lily and Peter Fonda plays the cool-looking but lugubrious Grandpa. It's a cast that will keep put-upon parents watching, if half-heartedly. Thomas fans of five years and under, meanwhile, will wish the actors wouldn't blow so much hot air; they will want to see their hero a bigger part in steaming up the storyline. --Tammy La Gorce

2.0 out of 5 stars They're not the right voices, 19 Jan 2004
By K. Nicholson (Hants, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
5 minutes into the file and my three year said "They're not the right voices" - how true he was.

After 10 minutes he went off to find some toys to play with - this from a kid who would gladly watch hours of Thomas from TV (if we let him).

The story tried to merge 2 worlds and it it didn't work at all - why they couldn't have set the whole film on the island of Sodor I have no idea.

This is really aimed at the US market - a shameless cash in to generate more revenue!

If you need a Thomas fix - buy the TV series instead

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment for True Fans of Thomas, 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I hope the US filmakers paid Britt Allcroft lots of money for the rights to use her well loved images of Thomas the Tank Engine in this way. Her TV versions of Thomas reflected Rev Awdry's love and understanding of trains, but this has been thrown away with a transition to a big screen.

The 'Thomas' name meant I had to take my children to the cinema to see the movie, but we were really disappointed.

An implausible story line, using magic to link Thomas's world to the 'real' world of a US railroad did little to keep my 4 year olds' interest. Having had them wander around bored in the cinema, I won't be buying the DVD.

1.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Disaster Movie, 11 Oct 2006
In 1945, the late Rev W Awdry started writing what turned out to be a series of 26 books of the Railway Series. This amounted to about 100 stories. Britt Allcroft bought the rights to the stories and she filmed them, very successfully, for television, narrated by Ringo Starr and then Michael Angelis.

Then a few things happened. Firstly, Britt's production company ran out of stories to film, so they had to make them up. The new stories, introducing new characters and locations, simply weren't up to scratch. But the children still loved them.

Then, perhaps eyeing the success of Teletubbies in the US, Briitt had the idea of a feature film, scripted and I believe directed by her.

This is the result.

If you are over the age of 3, this film may seem confusing and it should do. The plot has been warped by the fact that some serious editing had to be done, removing one of the characters completely. But the children still loved the film.

Unfortunately, the adults did not. The film crashed to poor reviews. Adults expected a better standard of production compared to the model railways that were the staple TV fare and the merging of real-life actors with the model engines in a bizarre fantasy storyline did not fit. But the children loved the film. But adults decide what to see at the theatre and they did not come to see it as a result.

Brit was forced out of her leading role at her production company as a result of this disaster movie. A disaster to watch. a disater to make and a disaster in the cinema. How sophisticated media types could get this so wrong is curious.

Your children may love this film. Watching it as an adult is an ordeal. As a person who takes delight in watching and reading the original stories this film is a travesty. Try to do something else while its on.
