Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
When Brandon Teena, a young man with an infectious, aw-shucks grin and an angelic face that's all angles, wanders into Falls City, Nebraska, he takes to the town as if it's a second skin. In little time he's fallen in with a gang of goofy if temperamental redneck boys, found himself a girlfriend, and befriended enough people to form something of a small family. In fact, it's the best time Brandon's ever had. However, there are shadows looming over Brandon's life: a court date for grand theft auto, a chequered criminal record, and a seemingly innocuous speeding ticket that could prove to be his undoing. Why? Because as it turns out, Brandon Teena is actually Teena Brandon, a woman masquerading as a man. This fascinating story was based on real-life events (as documented in The Brandon Teena Story) that occurred in 1993 and ended in tragedy: Brandon's rape and murder by two of his supposed friends. Despite this horrible outcome, however, in the hands of director Kimberly Peirce (who co-wrote the unfettered screenplay with Andy Bienen), Brandon's story becomes not oppressive or preachy, but rather oddly and touchingly transcendent, anchored by Hilary Swank's phenomenal, unsentimental (and Oscar-winning) performance. Swank inhabits Brandon's contradictions and passions with a natural vitality most actresses would refuse to give themselves over to. Brandon's deception is doomed from the start, but Swank's enthusiasm is infectious, and when Brandon starts romancing the sloe-eyed Lana (a pitch-perfect Chloë Sevigny), he finds a soulmate who wants to transcend boundaries and fated identities as much as he does. The last part of the film, when Brandon's true identity is discovered, is truly painful to watch, but in between the agony there are touching moments of sweetness between Brandon and Lana, who wrestles with the truth of who Brandon actually is. You'll come away from Boys Don't Cry with affection and respect for Brandon, not pity. --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Boys do cry.......after this, 24 Mar 2004
This review is from: Boys Don't Cry [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
Where do I begin ? Well, firstly, probably one of the best performances ever by an actress. Secondly, a heartbreaking film. Hilary Swank is tremendous. A very deserving Best Actress Oscar winner(1999)in this movie as sexually confused Teena Brandon and her relationship with the women in her "new" life as a "man". It shows us upfront how sexual orientatipn and judgment actually becomes one, and it simply moves me to tears every single time I watch it. The torment, confusion and guts to be yourself as a gay person comes across with sensitivity and harshness at the same time. That is where this small masterpiece finds its beauty : In hard-hitting binary storytelling. And passionate acting. Just watch it. Believe in it. And cherish it for always. Then we'll talk again. Unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful but Tragic, 26 Sep 2002

What I have to say about this film won't take very long at all!

It is absolutly wonderful. A masterpiece. Superb acting, great cast.

The story centers around a young girl who says she isn't gay as she feels like she is a man. She dresses as one, acts like one and even puts a sock in a certain place to complete her look.

Then she meets a femine (Chloe) girl who is in a destructive relationship and they soon fall in love.

The sex scenes are mild but important. And the tragic ending when the ex-boyfriend finds out is so realistic.

This fact based story of forbidden love, confused sexuality, heart break, love and revenge is so wonderfully and realistically portrayed that even the most insensitive person could not fail to cry at the end.

Wonderful dark and magical stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, 14 Mar 2004
This review is from: Boys Don't Cry [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
I think it is strange that in the 'customers who bought this also bought...' box all the films are lesbian titles. at the time of the film's release, and since the DVD release, this has been classified as a gay/lesbian interest film. this, however, does not do the film justice at all. Giving it such a definition as 'gay/lesbian interest' does not give it justice at all: anyone who enjoys thoughtful, romantic films will fall in love with Boys Don't Cry regardless of their sexuality. This is a truly brilliant film, one of the most underrated of the 90s. Hilary Swank is excellent as Teena Brandon, but to me the most compelling performance was that of Chloe Sevigny. Her's is the most complex character, confused by her love for Brandon. She plays her character beautifully, and you will find it hard to tear your eyes away from her whenever she is on screen. the scene where brandon makes love to her is painfully emotional, almost hard to watch at times. The song by The Cure, 'Boys Don't Cry' is one of the best pop songs ever, and completes an almost perfect film.

Will change your perception of human relationships forever.
