Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Mechwarrior 4 casts you as Ian Drusari, the nephew of a powerful Duke, who returns to his home world from the Clan Wars to find it occupied by a rival noble family: House Steiner.

You must launch a civil war and reclaim your birthright as you command a ragtag army of awesomely armed 40-foot tall, 80-ton, 90-mile per hour BattleMechs across the remote battlefields of your hostile world.

Not a bad tale to tell and Microsoft made sure the telling would play as well as it looks. The graphics are flat out amazing. Lighting effects, smoke trails, smouldering 'Mech armour, laser discharges and missiles all look incredible. You can fight in deserts, arctic regions and forests and even on the moon: all look sci-fi-movie-perfect. Mechs have more animation than ever before as well. They stomp across the battlefield and reel from weapons fire convincingly, and when the cannon fire finally punches through their armour, they light up like Christmas trees. Thermonuclear Christmas trees, that is.

The 'Mechs are faster than in previous games yet you still feel like you're piloting a lumbering, walking tank--this is a 'Mech combat simulator, not Quake III in power armour. The controls have been simplified, but this is a good thing. It used to take a long time to learn how to pilot 100 tons of armoured death, but now the controls are much more intuitive. No longer will players have to cycle through weapons lists; now, each weapons group is controlled by it's own button on the joystick. We recommend one of Microsoft's Sidewinder joysticks to really get you into the swing of things as the game's controls were written with that 'stick in mind.

The enemy 'Mechs in the single player game play well. Both your allies and the enemy use their 'Mech's capabilities wisely and provide a challenge throughout the game's long and entertaining campaign. Multiplayer is offered via Microsoft's easy-to-use Gaming Zone and there is also an Instant Action mode that will keep you playing long after the campaign is over. Mechwarrior is back, and looming large over the gaming scene. --Bob Andrews

Product Description

Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance takes place in the BattleTech universe of the future where giant robots slug it out on far-away battlefields. The creators of BattleTech and the original MechWarrior game gave return to give Mechwarrior 4 an all-new storyline and six new BattleMechs. You can customise any of the 21 available Mechs, though some features (such as the Mad Cat's missile racks) are standard.

There are 25 single-player missions spanning seven different terrain types: lunar, alpine, arctic, swamp, urban and desert. Before going into battle choose your lancemates based on three variable factors: their personality, their piloting skills and their mech. Full Internet support is included: create missions, host servers and participate in missions co-operatively.

3.0 out of 5 stars What a Dissapointment, 5 Feb 2003
By A Customer
The latest game in the series takes a step back from it predessor. With a somewhat simplistic weapon placement system more akin to a console game and a limited option on 'electronics' all Mechs feel much the same as each other. Whether a Cougar or a Daishi, Shadow Cat or Atlas it never quite feels like your trying to steer upto a 100 tons of metal as MW3 did. The lack of arm movement makes it doubly difficult to aim at high speed turns.
However, with a superior Lancemate menu and a wide range of Mech's to choose from and a resonable story line it's not all bad. An average and unispired game, it does nothing to drive the sieries forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Game, Amazing Graphics, 26 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This is a game for all the poeple who have brought home Mechwarrior 2 and Mechwarrior 3 before.
It has got more mechs for you to 'play' with and a lot more weapons too.
The story of the game is:
your name is Ian Dresari. your are a son of a rich and powerfull duke. You have just come back from war to find out that your family is dead and the planet is being run by the house Steiner.
It is your Job to save your planet.
You pick up star mates on the way. People like Jen and Terra.
You Salvage Mechs amd weapons on the way.
With amazing Graphics and effects this is a very well done game.
The training level is a good way to introduce you to the controls.
The only down side is that it is more a Joystick game than a Mouse game.
You can fight in Arctic, Desert, Greenland and much more. The heat affects your mech which is also a good effect.
This is a good game with good graphics and i give it a 9/10.There is also an add on pack called Black Knight coming soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rip-Snorting Good Fun, 5 Aug 2001
By A Customer
On a good PC this is a beautiful game. The graphics are startling and the animation of the mechs is very smooth as they stride across the nicely-realised landscapes. If you have a force-feedback joystick it will really come into its own here, with spot-on feedback as you crash into things, fire autocannon or take missile hits.

The campaign is fun but a little linear. If the game stopped there then it would be the sort of thing you played for a few weeks before moving on to something else. However, the multiplayer online game adds a whole new level of entertainment. Fighting in a team against other human players gets the adrenaline flowing every time - they're far tougher opponents than the game AI and you can get a lot more involved when you know your team mates are counting on you.

The only downside is that there are still a few multiplayer niggles to be sorted, so you'll need to download the latest version of the patch to play online.
