Laurie Anderson is something of a missionary. Having endured the scorn of some influential avant-garde peers for "selling-out" (by signing to a major label and taking her live shows to a relatively large, mainstream audience), Anderson instead chose to challenge their assumptions, proving by default that they were as ossified as anything in the so-called mainstream. Anderson also chose not to define herself strictly as an artist, but as a storyteller/de facto humorist--and one that dared point out that her chosen venue of "performance art" wasn't particularly avant at all. Or that the dreaded cliché was often merely the most efficient way to make a story point. This generous double-disc anthology charts the arc of Anderson's adventurous "mainstream" recording career, from the minimalist, unlikely Euro-hit "O Superman" through 15 years of ever more ambitious studio recordings and live shows. Tellingly, as Anderson's ambitions and acceptance grew, so did her playful warmth and often self-deprecating humour. Many don't know what to make of multi-media performance artist Laurie Anderson, but that hasn't stopped them from enjoying her creations. Anderson brings the worlds of modern art,theatre, pop music, world music, and the avant-garde together, blurring the superficial barriers between them with warmth, wonder, and a sense of the absurd.
TALK NORMAL collects tracks from all of her albums, from the minimalist, slightly foreboding BIG SCIENCE, through the sensuous, soulful STRANGE ANGELS, to the Spaulding Gray-like narrative-with-music THE UGLY ONE WITH THE JEWELS AND OTHER STORIES. Anderson enlists a variety of creative performers from many genres to embellish her creations, including Nile Rogers, Brian Eno, Bill Laswell, and Bobby McFerrin. Many of these pieces have asurreal, dreamlike ambience, as if Anderson is taping into some collective subconscious, but her humour, all-inclusive attitude, and unpredictability keeps things from becoming pretentious. TALK NORMAL is a compact synopsis of a unique talent.
