5.0 out of 5 stars The Oriningal and the best!!!, 14 Jan 2003
There are basically two essential Modern Lovers colections; this and the simply titled 'Modern Lovers', but of the two, I'd vote for this one every time. There is confusion as to whether this is indeed 'the original' but any arguments over rock 'n' roll history are soon forgotten once you put the CD in a press play. This is the sound of the group when they were lean, mean and still obsessed with the Velvet Underground and it really shows. Every song on here is far, far rawer than on 'The Modern Lovers' and I feel it gives the album a more passionate edge - everything sounds far less measured here. 'Roadrunner' still sounds absolutely classic but you really get the impression of downtown, suburban Massachusetts as a modernist nightmare that the songs protagonist (Richman) is alienated by yet finds comfort in. Elsewhere, 'She Cracked', 'I Wanna Sleep in Your Arms' and 'Walk Up the Street' prove that the Modern Lovers were 'New Wave' before anyone had even thought up such a stupid tag. However, it is on the purely vocal 'Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste' that Jonathan Richman really lays his soul bare. Legend has it that he would only sing this in the dark and made all the sound engineers hide under their mixings desks whilst he recorded this spirited and haunting pean to being young and alive.

Much has been said about this band, about their influence and suchlike, and while they will always be a 'cult' band (they never recorded a proper album so it's inevitable I guess) but it is on this album that you realise that everything you've heard is true.
