Synopsis
Original series hero Jet Li returns triumphantly in this series installment, which finds Chinese nationalist and kung fu hero Wong Fei Hong heading to the American west. But a conk on the melon renders our hero an amnesiac, and but for the intercession of friendly Indians, he would be lost to the wild--and therefore unable to help exploited railroad workers fight back against their unscrupulous bosses.

2.0 out of 5 stars The weakest of Jet Li's OUATIC appearances..., 17 Mar 2002
By Mr. A. T. Whitaker - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
For the first time since Once Upon A Time In China 3, Jet Li resumes the title role of Wong Fei-Hung, the Chinese hero. This time he has travelled to America -- and the Wild West -- together with 13th Aunt Peony (Rosamund Kwan) and Clubfoot Seven (Xin-Xin Xiong).

During an early encounter with Indians, an accident causes Wong Fei-Hung to lose his memory and become separated from his group. On recovery he notices that despite his amnesia he can still perform martial arts with his usual devastating effect. Now he must somehow communicate with a tribe when he only knows Cantonese, and try and get them to help him regain his memory and rejoin his friends.

This is actually not particularly great, despite the direction being by the normally-brilliant Sammo Hung ('Eastern Condors', 'Wheels On Meals', 'Dragons Forever') and the producer being Tsui Hark, who had involvement with the other entries in the series.

The Wild West setting is comparatively murky compared to the lush colourings in the Chinese-set predecessors (although I've not at the time of writing seen the entries between this and OUATIC3, which featured Chiu Man Cheuk ['The Black Sheep Affair', 'Body Weapon'] in the title role, so I don't know how they look), and many of the sections of the martial arts scenes have been undercranked to stupidly high levels, which I thought was a bit of a shame, as Jet Li and Xin-Xin Xiong don't really need to have a speed boost. I expect that the looming 1997 handover, coupled with the comparative lack of speed of the westerners, may have forced them to resort to this.

Sadly, not a classic. If you can, try before you buy.

Contains the usual option of watching it with English dubbing or Cantonese Language with English Subtitles (sadly they are the occasionally-poor-quality Hong Kong subs rather than the remastered ones, so expect some unintentional humour through dodgy translations).

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad film, poorly presented, 18 Feb 2005
By A. Midgley "xaotten" (everywhere) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a big fan of the original trilogy, but was very disapointed with this film. I thought that the purpose of Wong Fei Hung's visit to America would be to free the slaves as mentioned in the original. But this is a poorly researched, lazy attempt at making a 'East meets west' film.

I expected that the theme of western imperialism and the domineering of weaker nations would be the subject of this film. That is one of the main reasons i liked the originals so much. But the wars between the natives and the invaders seem to be left out completely. There is an encounter with indians, who are only white men painted orange who speak fluent english. They couldn't even be bothered to hire real natives. The natives also wonder round the Americans towns freely, and nobody seems to care. This is just plain annoying, and makes you feel that you are watching a kids movie. The character of 'Billy', the friendly, happy, fighting cowboy who loves everybody just makes you want to kill somebody.

To summarise the story, Wong Fei Hung loses his memory, gets it back(Legend). Then gets framed and imprisoned and fights some western robbers who for some reason know martial arts (Once upon a time in China). The film just ignores all sanity, and Wong Fei Hung leaves happily, having 'liberated' the town and making friends with the 'natives'. They seemingly ignore the fact that the natives are soon to be massacred and nearly wiped off the face of the earth. I just found myself asking 'Why couldn't it be set in China.
The only good thing about this film is the reunion of Wong, 13th Aunt, Iron foot(now called seven for some unknown reason) and So(L). But other than that it is a complete waste of money.

Th DVD? It is presented in two formats
1) Poor quality Widescreen with bad subtitles and sound.
2) Slightly better quality with hateful dubbing.
And, no. You cannot combine the two.

The extras are the only thing that prevented one star, with some OK behind the scenes stuff and some detail about Wong Fei Hung.

If you still really really want this after all I've said, only buy (or rent) it really really cheap. Then watch it under supervision with no sharp objects close by.

3.0 out of 5 stars A major disappointment from the great Jet Li, 27 Sep 2001
By "royal_film" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Though this film is enjoyable enough, it is hampered by Sammo Hung's woeful direction, and some of the lamest "baddies" yet committed to screen. Still, Jet Li is as good as ever, even if Hung's constant (and misguided) use of close-up often prevents us from seeing exactly what it is he is doing. In short, don't expect this movie to scale the heights OUATIC I, II and II did, but if you're a Jet fan, you might want to check this out.
