Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
"Filmed in Videcolor [explosions, drum roll, music builds to a climax] and Supermarionation"! The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a masterclass in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a) the show is in colour and (b) it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, pre-dating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armaggedon by 30 years and more (the acting is better, too), and fetishising gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, it transpires that the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies such as The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here.

As to the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines--the real stars of the show--while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (number plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catchphrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (Spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company.) The puppet stunt-work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood.

In this box set: All 32 episodes on nine videos, plus "The Brains Behind Thunderbirds", an exclusive-to-video introduction to the series narrated by Brains himself. --Mark Walker

4.0 out of 5 stars About Time !, 6 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Firstly I would like to correct the person who said this was first shown in 1964,it was in fact 1965! I have been a Thunderbird fan since I was a child and welcome this fantastic box set but my reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is this.If after all these years they have brought out the remastered complete boxset, then why have they not included the full-length feature films that go with it? Has everyone forgotten about these?

5.0 out of 5 stars Thunderbirds Are Back In Town!, 5 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I think Thunderbirds is one of the best programmes around, not only due to it's great characters and FAB plot (no punn intended), but also because of its appeal to every generation (I am only sixteen years old). The whole concept of International Rescue is brilliant, with the Tracey brothers and their machines making some of the best heroes on television ever. I have enjoyed watching most of the episodes, and even if some of them are weaker than others (like "The Mighty Atom"), the next episode after it makes up for it entirely. I have quite a lot of favourite episodes, including "Trapped In The Sky," "City Of Fire," "Space Probe" and "The Man From MI.5." My personal favourite though has to be, "The Cham-Cham," which let Lady Penelope, Parker and Tin-Tin take centre stage for once, in a breath-taking episode set in the Alps, with excellent ski-ing sequences and the usual great climax. This box-set is definately worth buying!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best series ever with puppets, 4 Oct 2000
By A Customer
What can you say about this series except it was just fantastic. The characters, the story lines and those machines were just out of this world for a show back in the sixty's. I will definately be buying this box set when it comes out and i'm sure so will a lot of other people.
