Amazon.co.uk Review
Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunnelling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humour that it made everything old seem new again. It also has a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battle a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars "I don't care what they're doing, as long as they're doing it way over there!", 27 Aug 2006

This review is from: Tremors [DVD] [1990] (DVD)
Every so often a gem of a movie comes along that takes everyone by surprise. Tremors is one of those movies. Taking its cue from the old black and white 'B' movies, it tells the story of two handymen, Val and Earl (Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward) who decide to give up their go-nowhere lifestyle on the very day that monsters move into the area and threaten the peaceful existance of Perfection, Nevada.

The movie barrels along at a cracking pace, setting up the plot with a series of strange occurances. When the creatures finally make their appearance, it's with the realization that they're not state of the art creations like, say, Ridley Scott's Alien, but they're still pretty scary in their own right, managing to excite and disgust in equal measure without going over the top.

So, thwarted in their attempts to leave town, Val and Earl are enlisted as reluctant heroes, battling to save the inhabitants of Perfection from becoming a hot lunch. Aided and abetted by the spunky and likeable Finn Carter, as a seismology student caught up in the action, and the excellent Michael Gross as the gun toting Burt Gummer, who manages to steal just about every scene he appears in, the pair quip their way from scene to scene in this lively and underrated horror spoof!

Things to watch out for? Check out the Graboid assault on Burt Gummer's fortified home! The doctor and his wife's demise! And the final 'explosive' scene is comedy-horror at its very best!

While not enjoying the budget of some of the bigger films of its day, Tremors manages to hit all the right notes in so many ways. Watch it!! You won't be disappointed! There are certainly worse ways to spend 92 minutes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaws on land, 7 April 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Tremors [DVD] [1990] (DVD)
Quite simply a classic.
A horror comedy master class. If you enjoyed shawn of the dead then you will love this, very much the definition of horror comedy.
It could of gone horribly wrong when a group of executives got together and decided to do a land based version of Jaws, but the idea is saved by a fantastic script, awsome acting and jaw busting effects, well they were then, but in an industry over populated by cringe worthy computer effects, Tremors hold its own beautify with some plush modle effects.

Set in the fictional town of Perfection, nevada, the film follows a day in the life of two handy men (Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon) eaking out an existance in the bad lands of America, until they decide they have had enough and head for the nearest city, only to find that something horrible is eating its way through every one they've known, and is eyeing up the residence of Perfection valley for afters, their only hope is to make a stand with the help of Burt Gummer, a gun crazed militaria fanatic and the owner of the local shop, played by John Carpenter staple Victor Wong (Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness).

seriously if you like horror and enjoy a laugh, get this one on your shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Class, 5 Jan 2006

This is absolute Classic B movie action. It's just fantastic, it has everything that it should have, hammy acting, silly story, silly monsters, slightly dodgy effects... but then it has more, some of the creature effects are actually really really good, and some of the actin gis actually excellent character acting. So long as you have a sense of humour you can not go wrong with this film or any in the series (four and a tv series so far) get it and enjoy.
