Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Those who have had difficulty spotting the differences between the songs on the last fifteen Ozrics' albums won't have any more luck with this one. On the other hand, those who feel that what the world needs now is a really happening amalgam of Tangerine Dream sequencer riffs with free-form Grateful Dead guitars jamming over the top will be blissed beyond belief. This outing, allegedly, has an Egyptian theme, and there is certainly something quasi-north African about the beautifully structured third track "Ashlandi Bol", but most of the time it's just the Ozrics doing what they do best, with Ed Wynne's fluid guitar lines soaring free over his own (and co-keyboardist Seaweed's) ever changing synths, occasionally augmented by John Egan's trippy jazz flute, and all of it anchored by one of the world's tightest rhythm sections, Zia Gelani (bass) and Rad (drums). Despite much snoozeworthy noodling, there are moments of sublime interaction, flashes of gorgeous melodic invention and, when the tempo picks up, the urge to dance on one leg like a whirling dervish is hard to resist. --Johnny Black

4.0 out of 5 stars A new Ozric Tentacles album!, 9 Jul 2001
By aking@eaeurope.com (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Sequencer riffs? Check. Long fluid guitar lines ? Check. Mad spiralling synths? Check. Trippy jazz flute? Check. Interesting dance rhythm patterns? Check. That can only mean one thing: A new Ozric Tentacles album!

Yes, The Hidden Step has an Egyptian theme: Check out "Ashlandi Bol", 'Aramanu' and 'Ta Khut' , all strange, dreamy and other worldly in turn. Yes, Seaweed's keyboard pyrotechnics are all here in tact. Yes, there's the usual club stylee excercise in crescendo on 'Tight Spin'. Yes, there's an embarassment of rhythmic and melodic riches all round.

But what about the guitar playing, right?! While the rate of evolution of the Ozric sound may have slowed, delivering another cosmic workout, it's all about the ever under-rated but brilliant Ed Wynne (see also Jurassic Shift review) and the fact that his playing takes you to the furthest reaches of your mind.

"Holohedron" opens things up with a gradual build on the synths, with Ed holding off just long enough before launching into his 1st solo on the album. It, like the guitar work overall on this album, is inspired, but there's not enough of it! There are other guitar moments littered throughout the album, but it has taken a bit of a back seat on this one. If you've yet to get an Ozrics album, then this is as good a place to start as anywhere, but I'd recommend Jurassic Shift from a guitar POV as essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mindblowing enhancement for transcendental rasa seekers, 4 Nov 2000
By A Customer
As usual, the Ozrics carry you off into the furthest reaches of your mind. Brilliant stuff. No lyrics, but listen to them while meditating on transcendental lila literatures such as Mahabharata or Ramayana. It's a mystical journey all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Of The Same?, 6 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Another cosmic workout by Ed and his space cadets that looks East to provide inspirational vibes on what appears, on first listening a more reflective affair thah their previous 'official' release...Waterfall Cities. The dreamy 'Aramanu' and 'Ta Khut' see the Ozrics fraternising with almost Tangerine Dream like soundscapes that are cooler than a Polar Bear lying on floating ice eating ice cream in a snow storm...strange image i grant you! Whilst the opening track 'Holohedron' treads familiar Ozric ground with Ed's glissando guitar workouts traversing Seaweed's keyboard pyrotechnics, the undoubted highlight is the awesome majesty that is 'Tight Spin'. Starting off with an insistent but restrained keyboard / rhythm refrain the track builds in musical layers to a crescendo as the boys become more frenetic, culminating in a wall of cosmic sound that ambushes the listener's audio facilitators, (or ears if you prefer), before gently descending into the coda. However Pixel Dream contains one of the Ozric's most simple and yet astonishing melodic lines, (Seaweed i presume) has ever recorded, providing a hypnotic juxtaposition to Ed's fluid, but possibly slightly harsh guitar sound. The Hidden Step's title track requires a few listens, at first appearing as an almost perfunctory afterthought, but further investigation reveals a musical tour-de-force evolving into a compendium of rhythm changes and melodic transcriptions. With this album the technological enhancements have bolstered the overall sound lending the Ozrics a more distinctive contemporary feel than ever before. Comparing this release to previous recent offerings one is left with the distinct impression that the Ozric evolution has slowed and has now settled within a particular musical framework that appears comfortable to the band. However one does wonder if the boys should diversify more before, god forbid, stagnation settles in. Just a thought guys!
