Amazon.co.uk Review
Beyond being Jess Franco's masterpiece, Vampyros Lesbos is a highpoint of the lesbian vampire film genre. Like Daughters of Darkness, The Vampire Lovers, and the New Wave vampire film, The Hunger, Vampyros features an extremely hot vampire, Countess Nadina Carody (Soledad Miranda), who dances at strip clubs in her spare time. In a brutally sexy opening scene, Miranda hypnotically seduces audience member Linda Westinghouse (Ewa Strömberg), calling her to her castle in Anatolia, on business from which Westinghouse never returns. Linda's boyfriend, Omar (Andrés Monales), eventually finds Linda institutionalized, cared for by one Dr. Seward. The characters in Vampyros Lesbos are foils for the cast of Bram Stoker's Dracula, in radical opposition to the traditional, clichéd horror film stereotypes. Psychedelic moments, like when Linda is seduced by the Queen of the Night, recall the grainy, erotic scenes of Jean Rollin's Requiem Pour Un Vampire, and Le Frisson Des Vampires. To dwell on the convoluted plot is clearly missing the point. With arguably the best horror movie soundtrack every released, Vampyros Lesbos revels in the sultry aspects of vampirism, resulting in long, romantic sequences of nude women playing in ocean waves, lying on chaise lounges, and making out in bed. Franco's other films, like She Killed in Ecstasy and Venus in Furs, serve as sequels, so see this first. In fact, see this film period. --Trinie Dalton

1.0 out of 5 stars Letdown in Lesbos, 17 Jan 2004
By wabrit (Derbyshire) - See all my reviews
I'd have to say this is a remarkably amateurish, tedious and inept film whose reputation rests more on the outlandish and entertaining soundtrack than any intrinsic merits of the film itself. The director is clearly in love with the zoom lens - whether this is due to any aesthetic motivation, or simply because such things are cheaper than bothering to move cameras around or do any editing, it would be fruitless to speculate. Similarly one could presumably put forward some compelling intellectual arguments for why so many scenes are not in focus, but it seems difficult to avoid the conclusion that this is down to incompetence.

Mr. Franco clearly has his admirers, but given that this film is one of their favourites, I can't see myself frittering away any more time or money on further examples from his ouevre.

I would recommend Harry Kumel's "Daughters of Darkness" as a far better treatment of a similar theme.

2.0 out of 5 stars Franco's Classic? - Maybe not, 29 Aug 2008
By haunted (IRELAND) - See all my reviews
This is often described as Jess Franco's masterpiece and I was looking forward to seeing it.
To be honest I was disappointed.

The late Soledad Miranda as the vampire brings Linda (Ewa Stromberg) to the island she lives on to seduce her. In a way that isn't really explained Stromberg is found floating in the water and is treated as a "Jane Doe" in an exclusive psychiatric clinic by Dr Seward (Denis Price), himself fascinated by vampires.
The vampire comes back for Linda and the film moves to a predictable conclusion.

Of course watertight storylines aren't to be expected from 70's Euro vampire movies but this isn't where the film disappoints. Franco surrounds the paper-thin plot with long stylish set pieces but it doesn't stop the movie from being painfully slow at times.

Franco is besotted with the gorgeous Miranda. Understandable but he thinks that simply having her lovely brown eyes staring at the camera is enough for most scenes in the film. He also sees nothing wrong with showing her perform the same long dance routine at both the start and towards the end of the movie.

Stromberg is good as the object of the vampire's attention, having to display (slightly) more acting range than Miranda, as she has to look worried, puzzled and terrified as well as entranced.

Overall then not the classic I hoped for but definitely a must see for anyone with an interest in this genre.
The at times hilariously over the top 70's music will probably bring a smile to your face. It certainly reminded me of the Austin Powers movies soundtracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kitsch at its best, 7 Dec 2006
By M. Baynes - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There are two reasons to see this movie 1) The late Soledad Miranda who burned the screen up with her beauty shortly before a most unfortunate automobile accident and 2) the music - funky jazz and psychedelia. The 'plot' as such is quite feeble and as a horror film it doesn't really work but if you are looking for unashamed low budget nonsense this is the best there is!

R.I.P Soledad Miranda

I wouldn't buy this film for the lesbians, or the vampires. Shot on a very limited budget, it nevertheless has its moments. Read more
