Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Microsoft's Links 2001 sees the inclusion of a new course designer and six major new courses on top of the usual array of goodies the series normally boasts.

Not stopping there, Links 2001 boasts 14 new golfers for you to cycle through, and their voices and (polite) expressions of disappointment have been sampled to accompany their visual rendering. These figures sit well with the excellent graphics, a customary consideration for modern 3-D accelerators.

If you need a peaceful alternative to the all-action noise-fest of Fifa 2001 or any shooting game, here it is. The sound effects are functional to the game by default. On average, you'll only hear the birds in the background, the sound of the shot, and the player's verbal reaction to it. You must gauge the mouse-controlled clubswing to perfection to get the best shot, a process that proves quietly addictive even to a non-golfing fan.

Sadly, Microsoft haven't taken into account the 15-minute installation time caused by swapping three of four CDs--this is a prime candidate for a DVD release--and you will need a lot of disk space with the maximum default being 1.1GB. Created by the same team that did Leader board on the Commodore 64 this game knows what it's doing when it comes to being a golf game. The only drawback it suffers is that it lacks the key players of today, such as Tiger Woods. This said, if you are looking for a golf game for the gameplay rather than the stats, this is as good as any. --Kenneth Henry

5.0 out of 5 stars Updated Review, 22 Mar 2001
By A Customer
While the previous reviewers may have valid points as compared to previous versions of this game I as a newcomer to the series but not the sport was most impressed. The graphics(once you get the video card sorted) are first class with each course modelled down to the exact inch. Microsoft has also released a convertor so that the game is backward compatible with old courses which will satisfy the whingers here. The online ability of this game is endless with tournaments offering huge prizes for the elite and a ranking position for those in for a bit of fun. The multiplayer option has been greatly speeded up as well making this a much more worthwhile experience. A superb game and well worth any golfing fans money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Have "Fixed" Something That Wasn't Broke !!!, 13 Nov 2000
By Thomas TEUBER (Vienna, Austria) - See all my reviews
I used to be a Microsoft-supporter, but when they started to buy Access-Software Inc., I suspected already that trouble was on its way. And now, having the long awaited LINKS 2001 in my hands and on my harddisk, I am proven to be right. The Readme already tells you stories about which video-cards the game will not run with, and even with a card that is OK, you must look for a new driver. And then, when the game is finally up and running, I was ever so disappointed by the graphics, that are not better than in LINKS LS 2000, they look somehow unreal. Not to talk about the fact that I can only chose between 3 different screen resolutions (and hardware 3D acceleration still doesn't work!!!). The new swingmeter is quite OK, but all the rest is worse than in the previous version! And it's a SCANDAL that we cannot use all the "old" courses which we have bought over the years and for which we have spent a lot of money!....I have never seen such a great idea executed so poorly! I own the German version, and they cannot even make the differences between Meters and Yards correctly! This part of the game has so many glitches, that it takes too long to describe them all, but if this is really the tool with which Microsoft design the courses, then I'm sorry for the poor guys! Access Software Inc. have surely used a better machine!

All in all: for those of us who loved the previous versions, LINKS 2001 is a waste of money! For newcomers who have never seen the good old LINKS LS versions, it might be worth it, but I doubt (better get the old games out of your father's cupboard). I'm really disappointed!

this is the best golf game on the pc ever. The graphics are incredible and the gameplay is wonderful. Tournaments rule and even though putting is hard at first it becomes easy and yes bunker play is a little hard but not impossilbe. If u like golf u just must own this game.
