3.0 out of 5 stars Not great, but definitely fascinating!, 13 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Beowulf (DVD) [1999] (DVD)
Let's say it at once, I have very mixed feelings about this film. Certainly it is not great, barely good to be honest, but it does have a couple of interesting qualities and thus is worth to be given a chance - I have given it three, and will keep returning to it...

I would broadly characterise the genre as "Action Fantasy". Very loosely based on the old Germanic Beowulf saga the story concerns a little community harassed by an enigmatic monster, picking off warriors one by one. Enter Beowulf, a mythical and mystical man who tracks the monster down and, finally, kills it. But, to everyones surprise, this is not the end of it...

If you know the Beowulf saga, you will hardly recognise it - only a few major elements have been fetched from it and then set in a different environment (Grendels mother, for instance, is NOT what you expect!!). The setting is very anacronistic - what about "knights" with public address systems... - but still not more weird than the original saga itself, really.

The acting is generally "acceptable" - seldom better, sometimes worse. Christopher Lambert does his title character reasonably well, while some other actors perform below par though, perhaps, never really bad.

Well, that doesn't sound so good, really - how come, then, that I am fascinated by it? I think there are two main reasons:
** The structure is well worked out. I guess it fits pretty well with the established cinematic story telling structures (Acts I, II and III; plot points where they belong; constant tempo; Good versus Evil; etc).
** The story is true to its setting, and the storytellers avoid one of the greatest pitfalls of all time: explanations. There are quite a few things that are never explained, not even with a hint, leaving them to your fantasy to work out.

Technically the film is good, though the special effects are somewhat dated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good combat scenes, but somebody lost the script., 16 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Beowulf (DVD) [1999] (DVD)
Good combat scenes - Lambert always was good at it. FX are average - it's not Matrix, but I've seen worse. Unfortunately - it looks like somebody lost the script, so the plot is a little bit... uncomplete (for me).

4.0 out of 5 stars Turn off your brain and enjoy the action, 5 April 2001
By Brian (Aldershot, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beowulf (DVD) [1999] (DVD)
This is not going to win any awards for the dazzeling script, but for pure brainless action entertainment you can't go far wrong.
