5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums I've heard, 17 Jul 2001
By A. Robinson "andrewrobinson5" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This albums sticks two fingers up at anyone who has ever slagged the Hawks off. Sure, they have had their moments, but this proves they can be a force to be reckoned with. Recorded on the Black Sword tour of '85, this album follows on nicely from the studio concept album about the adventures of Elric of Melnibone, a pale hero in a fantasy world created by Michael Moorcock. Moorcock was a collaberator with the Hawks since the early days and it's good to see the bands admiration of the author manifesting itself in the releases they had in '84 & '85. Live Chronicles allows you an insight to the excitement and extravagance of their live show at this time. The pace of the album is fast and heavy but well played and well produced. Hi-lights are 'Dragons and fables' 'Masters of the universe' and 'Magnu' Huw Lloyd Langtons guitar playing is fantastic and unmistakable. Live albums can be hit and miss, and lets be honest although Hawkwind are a great and mysterious band, their recordings were often lacking in the studio never mind on stage. This is a pleasing exception and should be heard by not only Hawkwind fans but any sceptic who never embraced the band. This may change your mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST LIVE GIGS ............, 9 Feb 2001
This CD opens fast and furious and more or less stays that way.'Master of the Universe'is a track I cant stop myself from going back to over and over! But that does'n't mean I ignore any of the other tracks.Far from it.I had my doubts about this album to start with,-not anymore! I must say that having read ALL of M.Moorcocks Eternal Champion books, especially Hawkmoon and ELRIC-to whom this gig is dedicated to-I fail to be 'reminded' of Elric and his adventures. So to me this is quite simply a collection of 'ROCK YOU TO YOUR SOUL'Hawkwind songs(I use the word song somewhat loosely!).

Perhaps had I seen the stage show I would 'feel' a whole lot differently.Anyhow, this is an incredible part of Hawkwind and I am extremely glad I bought it.

The bonus CD is just that: a (big) bonus. With masterpieces such as 'ASSAULT AND BATTERY (on the human anatomy)'except here its title is 'LIVES OF GREAT MEN'.(trk.11). 14 wonderful bonus tracks making this excellent value ALL ROUND..!!....

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the greatest live recordings of hawkwind, 28 Nov 2000
By Andrew C. Madden "Mad Andy" (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this on vinyl years ago and played it until it melted, then went out and bought the cd version. The latest version is repackaged with bonus tracks, it really is the ultimate in live recordings, and dare i say it - one of the best live albums of any band. Particularly well endowed with lloyd langton's awesome guitar work, hawkwind's live set has been captured on album and it is a treat. Michael Moorcock's Elric now has his epic soundtrack, and it is quite nice to have a break once in a while from all that space and alien stuff

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent live performance
This is a curious mix of the sublime & the ridiculous. Like most of Hawkwinds output, is has moments of pure genius - for example, you will never hear a better guitarist than... Read more
