Product Description

From Amazon.com

Two generations of guitarists merge on this cleverly-titled album, with former Dire Straits virtuoso Mark Knopfler taking time off from scoring movies to join Chet Atkins, one of the fathers of electric guitar pickin'. And there's some mighty fine country pickin' on display here, with the duo joined by some of Nashville's all-time finest players, including the late, great Floyd Cramer, Mark O'Connor, Larry Londin, Vince Gill, and Steve Wariner. The material ranges from choice country covers (Doc Watson's "Poor Boy Blues," Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams") to rock 'n' roll ("Yakety Ax," a take on Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax"), jazz (Django Reinhardt's "Tears"), a Knopfler original, and even the old standard "I'll See You in My Dreams." It sounds like they had fun, too! --Bill Holdship

CD Description

Without Chet Atkins, country music may never have crossed over into the pop charts in the '50s and '60s. Atkins' style grew out of his admiration for Merle Travis, and expanded Travis' signature syncopated thumb-and-fingers roll into new territory. Chet Atkins' role as record producer in the '60s and '70s made the Nashville sound heard and loved throughout the world.
On NECK AND NECK, Mr. Guitar teams up with Dire Straits' guitarist Mark Knopfler. Together, the two guitargreats perform a wide variety of music encompassing country, pop, and even European jazz influences. Atkins and Knopfler perform the Boots Randolph tune, "Yakety Sax" that Atkins, decades earlier, turned into a country hit after renaming it "Yakety Axe". The two guitarists also perform the Django Reinhardt ballad, "Tears", employing a delicate and introspective touch. Perhaps the best song here though is the endearing "There'll Be Some Changes Made", which incorporates a virtuoso guitar battle.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best way to remember Chet Atkins ..., 5 Jul 2005
This review is from: Neck and Neck (Audio CD)
CHET: "...I'll change the scene, I'll change my new team, I'll wear dark glasses, become risky, I'll start like jackson and prince: you'll see me riding in my mercedes benz! nobody wants you when you just play guitar, there'll be some changes made."
MARK: "chet, you never played a rock'n roll, your kind of country is a little bit old ..."
CHET: "that's hurts, but your money for nothing and your chicks for free...
MARK: "groupie girls..."
CHET: "I really liked to find out for myself, don't you know, I have a kind of quiet life down here on the music road..."
- only to hear this ironic dialogue between the great guitar-players you should buy this CD.
Chet Atkins died, aged 77, and they never can play together once more - this CD is the best way to remember this wonderful session, these duelling guitars, challenging each other to greater heights...

5.0 out of 5 stars "Toe tapper extraordinaire", 23 Nov 2000
This album never fails to put a smile on your face and I defy anyone to keep their hands, feet or head still whilst listening. The tracks range from layed back melodies perfect for a sunday morning,to feel good toe tappers that force you to join in. Unmistakeable Knopfler complimented by the renouned guitar 'picker' Atkins. A 'Gem' in anyones "easy listening" collection. The fun had by both Knopfler and Atkins shines through in every track.Especially worth a listen is "There'll be some changes made" (The verbal and musical jousting heard between the two 'competitors' in this track forms a kind of subtle duelling banjos for gentlemen).Buy it! You wont be disappointed, Honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Picken superlative picken, 26 Oct 2004
This review is from: Neck and Neck (Audio CD)
Frankly, albeit owning "Screenplaying" and "Shangri-La" I have not been greatly enthused by Mark Knopfler - until this album ! Teamed with the great Chet Atkins, the competition brings an extra portion of vitality from Mr Knopfler. Then again, the same is also true on "The Notting Hillbillies" album. Perhaps Knopfler is at his best when challenged by other skilled artists - certainly there is not a track on this album I 'ever' skip !
