Most of us only know Aleko from the cavatina 'ves tabor spit', a favourite on bass recital discs. The rest of the work is however of equal quality, and highly enjoyable - if you can cope with the Pushkin based verismo libretto. Not that this is the Russian Pagliacci or Il Tabarro. It is in any case by far and away the best of the three one-acters Rachmaninov set.

Gramophone (review Feb 2001 online) was a little sniffy about Orbelian's orchestra, and Jarvi's recording on DG has a better known cast, but to weigh against that the Delos disc includes a complimentary CD of Puskin's original poem "The Gypsies" read in English, by Michael York, and Russian. As with all Orbelian's Delos recordings full Russian text and English translations are included.
